Stephen Bryan McDaniel passed on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the age of 49. Stephen was born on July 16, 1976, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Stephen was known for his very special smile and was nicknamed "Smiley".
Stephen built his working life around service and care for others, spending many years as a chef and working at Captain Ratty's. In the kitchen, his steady patience and generous spirit were evident—not only in what he prepared, but in the quiet devotion he brought to the everyday work of feeding and welcoming people.
A faithful presence to those who knew him, Stephen also found joy in the camaraderie and excitement of sports. He loved all sports, especially hockey, football, and soccer, and was a devoted fan of the Washington Capitals, Los Angeles Chargers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also loved fishing and the ocean, drawn to the calm and renewal found near the water.
Most of all, Stephen will be remembered as a wonderful person—kind-hearted, loving, patient, and very funny—someone whose warmth and goodness left a lasting mark on family, friends, and all who had the privilege of sharing life with him.
Left to cherish his memory and continue in his legacy are his beloved wife Susan Gimbel McDaniel, his parents James and Janis Parker McDaniel, Erick Gimbel and his wife Alicia, grandchildren Natalie and Anthony, and his brother David C. McDaniel. He is preceded in death by his faithful companion Sunshine.
The family will hold a private service to celebrate his life.
Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve the family and friends of Stephen "Smiley" Bryan McDaniel.
