William “Bill” Albert Wescott, Jr, of New Bern, NC went home to be with the Lord on July 16, 2021 at the age of 72 after a brief battle with cancer. His faith in Jesus Christ and in the scripture from II Corinthians 5:8 “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” (NKJV), gave him peace knowing he will be spending eternity in heaven with God.
Bill was born and raised in Chatham, MA on August 4, 1948 to William and Patricia Wescott, Sr. Bill graduated from Chatham High School in 1966 and lived, what some may call, the “classic hippie lifestyle” until accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior in 1975. God miraculously turned his life around. He attended Bible college and then returned home to Chatham making a living as a commercial fisherman. During the years of raising his children with his first wife, fishing became too demanding and he started his painting business, “Promise Painting” with his dear friend and business partner, Sheldon Clarkson.
Bill loved his life in Chatham and probably would have never left if he hadn’t met his wife, Diane. They both believed that it was God that brought them together since they were living in opposite ends of the US, Portland, OR and Chatham, MA. In 2008, Bill married his partner in Christ, Diane, whom he loved and cherished as one of God’s greatest gifts in his life. After living briefly in Portland, they moved to Arizona for 5 years. Bill missed living by the water which led them to New Bern, NC. God truly blessed him (& Diane) with a home on the water. He enjoyed relaxing with a book, one of his favorite pastimes while looking out at the water or “puttering” in his workshop with the garage door open watching the boats, kayaks and wildlife. Bill was always involved in church and Bible studies wherever he lived. While in New Bern, he attended a men’s morning Bible study and also Sunday school and small group at Tabernacle with his wife, Diane.
Bill’s love for his Savior poured out into the lives of all who knew him. He was always willing to lend a hand and share Christ’s love by helping people in a practical way. He was an encourager and one who pointed others to Christ. His heart’s desire was to share the joy of walking with the Lord day by day with his family, friends, neighbors and anyone he met. One of God’s gift to Bill was his ability to strike up conversations with his distinct Bostonian accent and good storytelling. These qualities have endeared him to so many. All those lives Bill touched were blessed to have known him. His loved ones will miss him very much.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Diane, his daughter Meredith Perry, his sons Te Vezina and William Wescott III, his grandchildren Dylan, Avery, Claire, and Indigo, his brother, Brian Wescott, his mother Patricia Wescott, his uncle Steven Berkeley, his niece Patti-Ann Marques, and former wife, Janet Mitchell. He is preceded in death by his father William Wescott Sr.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in New Bern. Grateful thoughts go to the Craven County Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Craven County Hospice, 2828 Neuse Blvd., New Bern, NC 28562. Condolences may be sent to the family via Cotten Funeral Home or online at www.cottenfuneralhome.com.
