Alexander (Alex) Hrechko, Jr, of New Braunfels, TX, passed from death into eternal life on December 8, 2013. He is survived by his sister Donna Moses; three sons, Rick, Randall, and Rob; daughters-in-law Ann and Lee; five grandchildren Benjamin, Joseph, Nicolas, Jonathan, and Alex; and nieces and nephews Traci, Amy, Alexandra, Nick, and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his beloved wife, Chloe.
Alex was born on August 15, 1941, in Joliet, Illinois. He graduated with honors from Joliet Township High School in the class of 1959. Alex then went on to the University of Illinois where he obtained a degree in metallurgical engineering. Upon his graduation, he married Chloe Jean Goepper of Joliet, Illinois. They were together until her death from cancer in 2009.
Alex was dedicated to his chosen profession. He worked most of his adult life in the steel industry, first for Youngstown Sheet and Tube in Youngstown, Ohio, until 1978, and then with Structural Metals Incorporated in Seguin, TX, and Birmingham Al. He was an active member of the Association of Iron and Steel Technology, serving as chairman in 1991 and 1992. In his long career in the steel industry, Alex worked his way from shift foreman to plant manager. He was as much at home standing next to an old style blast furnace in Youngstown as he was watching the modern, efficient electric arc furnace tap out in Seguin. He was an inspiration to many young managers during a career that spanned four decades.
Alex was also very active in church and community. While his kids grew up, he wore many hats, from baseball coach to Cub Scout pack leader to a founding member of Seguin Youth Soccer league. He served leadership roles at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin as well as at First Protestant Church in New Braunfels, where he was active on the board. Alex was also an avid golfer who played 30 years in the Central Texas Golf Fest.
Visitation will be held at Zoeller Funeral Home on December 12, with family receiving friends from 7 to 9 pm. A memorial service celebrating Alex’s life will be held at First Protestant Church on December 13, 2013 at 10:00 am. There will be a light lunch served in the fellowship hall afterwards. Reverend Phil Brown will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made in the name of Alex Hrechko to the Children’s Ministry Program of First Protestant Church, 172 West Coll Street, New Braunfels, TX, 78130.
