

Alice Schapiro Simon’s ninety-nine years of hard work, patience and service to others came to a close on December 8, 2013. Born December 3, 1914 in Driftwood, Texas to Max and Ella Schapiro, she helped on the farm and attended San Marcos High School. On November 27, 1935 she began her forty eight years of marriage to Hilmar Emil Simon of Hancock. Her career as a teacher and principal spanned forty-three years at Fisher Store, Spring Branch, Solms, Kirby and Carl Scherz Schools. She completed a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University, a Master’s degree from Trinity University and special education certification from Incarnate Word College. Her teaching career had two interludes as she devoted a year each to the birth of her son Jerry and her daughter Jo Ann. After “retiring” in 1980 she enjoyed her grand children and great grand children and served as a sitter for elderly patients. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of New Braunfels.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and four sisters: Elbertine Walters, Darris Ray, Dorothy Lea Messamore and Maxine Robinson. She is survived by a sister, KathalineWilson and her husband Jack of Lockhart. She is also survived by her son Jerry Simon and his wife Debby of Waelder, her daughter Jo Ann Carson and husband Dwaine of Dallas, and four grandchildren. Her granddaughter Jodie Siptak and her husband Trace are parents of Alice’s two great-grand-daughters, Hanna and Karli of Flatonia. Her other grandchildren are Toby Simon of Flatonia, Jeffrey Carson of Nashville, TN and Bret Carson and his wife Nishaa of Orlando, FL.
Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, December 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Zoeller Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 12, 2013 at First United Methodist Church at 1 p.m., and is located at 572 San Antonio Street, New Braunfels, TX.
The family extends the most sincere appreciation to extended family, friends, church members and caretakers who visited, called and wrote her frequently. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation or Hospice of South Texas.
