Berney Gene Turner went into the peaceful and loving embrace of his Lord on Wednesday, April 26th, 2017, surrounded by family. He was loved as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Born to Charlton E. Turner and Eunice Neighbors Turner on July 7, 1933, in Pickton, Texas, Berney lived there until he attended college at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana. During the Korean War he entered military service in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, remaining there until his honorable discharge.
During the next twenty-five years Berney was active in the insurance industry. After selling his own agency in 1983 in Houston, he moved to Garland at which time he acquired his father’s construction company. Berney retired from construction in 1999 and he and wife Shirley moved to New Braunfels to be near their daughter and grandchildren.
Berney was predeceased by his parents and beloved son Berney Alan. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley, their daughter Nancy Edelen (Paul), grandchildren Cameron and Amy Edelen, of New Braunfels. His survivors also include brother Tom (Carol) of Vero Beach, Florida, brother Bob (Linda) of Garland, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Berney was a man of unwavering faith who loved his Lord, his family, and his country. Over the years he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. Among his other sport enjoyment, he was a San Antonio Spurs and a Dallas Cowboy fan, rarely missing televised games.
Berney first read the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley in high school. The poem reads in part: “Out of the night that covers me….in the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced or cried aloud. My head is bloody but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears….”
In Berney’s life, his refrain was “God is the master of my fate and the captain of my soul.”
Because Berney had such a heart for our wounded veterans, memorials are suggested to Wounded Warriors, 12672 Silicon Drive, #105, San Antonio, TX 78249. If desired, designation may be for specialty wheelchairs for those who have returned with disabilities.
A Public Visitation will take place on Friday, April 28, from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., with a Funeral Service to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Zoeller Funeral Home, 615 Landa Street, New Braunfels 78130. Burial will take place Saturday, April 29th at 9:30 a.m. at Hill Country Memorial Gardens.
