Retired Staff Sergeant David “Super Dave” Cardenas, 78, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, surrounded by the enduring presence of those he loved most. Born on December 30, 1947, in Sugar Land, Texas, to Jesus and Josephina Cardenas, David’s life was one defined not merely by time, but by purpose. He graduated from Lamar Consolidated High School in 1967 and went on to pursue higher education with quiet determination, earning an Associate’s Degree from St. Philip’s College and a Bachelor of Science from Texas State University.
David’s commitment to service was both steadfast and profound. He served honorably in the Army National Guard as a translator during the U.S. invasion of Panama and went on to build a distinguished 34-year career with the United States Air Force. In his later years of service, he devoted himself to human resources as civilian personnel at Randolph Air Force Base, where his integrity and steady leadership left a lasting impression on those around him.
He lived guided by a simple yet immovable philosophy: that integrity, kindness, and service are not ideals to aspire to, but obligations to fulfill. David was a man of gentle strength—soft-spoken, deeply thoughtful, and anchored by an abiding love for his family. To his children, he was both teacher and example, imparting lessons not through grand declarations, but through daily acts of quiet consistency: do what is right, strive always to become better than you were yesterday, and meet adversity not with defeat, but with resolve and optimism.
David possessed a rare and beautiful intellect—one that bridged history and science with a deeply human understanding of the world. He was endlessly curious, often sharing stories that reflected his reverence for the past and his deep respect for the sacrifices that shaped the nation he loved. Yet for all his knowledge, he remained a man of remarkable humility, never seeking recognition, only responsibility.
Those who knew him will remember not only his wisdom, but his subtle humor—the perfectly timed remark, the unexpected wit that could fill a room with laughter. He had an uncanny ability to recall lines from nearly any film and to answer even the most obscure history questions with thoughtful precision. These gifts, while remarkable, were secondary to the role he cherished most: husband, father, and provider.
To his wife and children, David was not simply a great man—he was the greatest man. His life was a testament to selflessness, a quiet and unfaltering devotion to ensuring that his family was always supported, protected, and loved—even in his final days.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Eva Cardenas; his children, Roy David, Megan Laura, and Isaiah John; and his grandson, Kai David. He is also survived by his sisters, Susie Medellin, Mary Cortez, and Sophia Cardenas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Josephina Cardenas, and his brother Albert Cardenas.
His legacy is not confined to memory, but lives on in the values he embodied, the lives he shaped, and the love he gave so freely.
