DeForest Voorhees Sr.

Deforest Barkley Voorhees Sr. passed away June 9, 2015. Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 20, 1911 to George Edward Voorhees and Elizabeth Burgess Voorhees. He moved to Montclair, New Jersey at an early age and graduated in 1929 from Montclair High School where he was captain of the New Jersey State Championship track team in his senior year. Mr. Voorhees was a graduate of Dartmouth College with an A.B. degree in 1933, lettered in track, a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and attended the Tuck Graduate School of Business Administration. He began his career in the Treasury Department of Standard Oil now Exxon Mobil Corporation in New York City in March 1938. On April 20, 1940 he married Jean Scudder in East Orange, New Jersey. They had two children Deborah Heidemann born in 1942 and Deforest Barkley Voorhees Jr. born in 1947. In 1972 they moved to Houston, Texas. Mr. Voorhees retired from Exxon Company U.S.A. in Houston June 1976, after 38 years of service having held management positions in Supply Controllers, Traffic and Purchasing in several of the corporation’s affiliated companies. He was a member and past President of Pine Forest Country Club in Houston. Mr. Voorhees was also the Treasurer of the Texas branch of The Holland Society of New York. With a keen interest in genealogy, he was a member of the Van Voorhees association and the Miles Merwin association. His wife Jean passed away in September 1978. Mr. Voorhees married Nan Benke in March 1979. They moved to New Braunfels, Texas in 1999. Nan passed away in September 2010. His son came and maintained a home for him until passing away on November 20, 2014. After his son’s passing he moved into Rio Terra Assisted Living facility. He leaves his daughter Deborah Heidemann of Houston, Texas. Granddaughters Elizabeth Barrera and husband David Barrera of Keller , Texas, Katie Whytal and husband Chris Whytal of Oviedo, Florida, and Heather Deiss and husband Scott Deiss of Houston, Texas. Great Grandchildren Zachary Barrera and wife Catherine Stroud of Fort Worth, Texas , Hannah Barrera of Keller, Texas, Matthew Whytal of Oviedo, Florida and Noah Whytal of Oviedo , Florida.
