Born in Muleshoe, TX to Wesley Dewey and Iris Verna Dement (Slayden) on April 30, 1934, Doris spent most of her childhood on the family cotton farm. She attended elementary school and later graduated from the local high school in Muleshoe. Doris later went on to work for the telephone company as a phone operator. During this time, she met her future husband, Norman (Norm) Emil Stephens, who was attending Texas Tech University a short distance away. Doris and Norm would continue to date over the next few years before they were married, started a small family, and ultimately moved to New Braunfels after Norm finished college. During this time Doris would go to work and later retire from Sears. She loved working for Sears, as it gave her the opportunity to do her favorite past time, wrapping presents. After retirement she spent her golden years helping raise grandchildren, camping, and feeding anyone who was willing to eat.
Doris was married to Norman Stephens in 1952, and even in her final hours Doris was a devoted, loving wife. Together they built a loving home and family consisting of two children, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Doris was always the glue that kept the family coming together for holidays and special events. She loved to cook, and there was never an empty stomach when Doris was around.
Doris was a devout woman who took her faith in God seriously, attended church regularly, and for many years was a very active part of Oakwood Baptist Church, where Norm and Doris were both charter members. One of her favorite church groups was the Purple Hat Ladies, who would regularly meet for coffee or the occasional game of Bunco. Doris loved her family and never skirted her responsibility as a wife, mother, and moral compass for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Verna Dement, her husband, Norman Stephens, as well as her daughter, Carol Preuss. Doris is survived in life by her siblings Wesley Dement (Peggy), June Vinson (Pat), Linda Harbin (Bill), her son David Stephens (Cindy), her grandchildren Sean Preuss (Katey), Cory Preuss (Vanessa), and Michael Stephens (Shay), as well as her great-grandchildren Trenton, Peyton, Remi, Randi, Kaylyn, Holly, and Harper, and great-great granddaughter Eva.
Doris’ strength, faith and love for her family has only helped us to grow strong. Her devotion to her family, husband and all others, helped make us who we are today. Doris was a very special woman, who loved all and was loved by all. She will be deeply missed.
Services for Doris will be held at Oakwood Baptist Church on July 12th, 2024 at 10am in the church Chapel.
