George (Stu) Andrew Steurer Jr., aged 87, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, in New Braunfels, Texas. Born on September 12, 1937, in Jersey City, New Jersey, George lived a remarkable life defined by service, love, and an enduring zest for life.
George served 20 years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era, rising to the rank of Senior Chief. He loved to tell stories about his time in the Navy which instilled in him a lifelong respect for those who serve our country. Before his military service, George attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and brimmed with pride whenever the basketball team reached the NCAA tournament.
Professionally, George worked in the medical and technology equipment service industry, a career he cherished deeply. He took immense pride in his work and formed lifelong friendships with his colleagues. George and his wife Maurine served an 18-month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in New Zealand, where they loved every minute serving others and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
George was a man of diverse passions and boundless energy. A sports enthusiast, he loved cheering for the Navy, BYU Cougars, Wisconsin Badgers, and Iowa Hawkeyes. Despite his age, George never slowed down—he loved push-ups and knocked out 45 two days before he passed, surfed with his family in his 70s, and rode jet skis well into his 80s. Known for his youthful style and mischievous twinkle in his eye, George brought joy and laughter to everyone around him.
George’s heart was as big as his spirit. He was patient, kind, and had a playful sense of humor. He celebrated life’s small moments, always acknowledging the achievements of his loved ones and making each family member feel cherished. George was a true peacemaker, valuing relationships and finding ways to nurture love and understanding in every interaction. He had an impeccable sweet tooth, favoring cinnamon rolls, root beer, and chocolate milk, a love for watercolor painting, and a talent for building things in his woodshop. George’s world revolved around his beloved wife, Maurine, his dog, Bandit, his children, and his grandchildren, and he adored traveling the world with them.
George is preceded in death by his parents, George Andrew Steurer, Sr., and Margaret Cecilie Trautmann Steurer, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Maurine Jackson Steurer; their children Angela Cole (Pete), Tracy Longo (Joe), and Keith Steurer (Karen); and grandchildren Lexi, Kenzie, Ethan, Henry, Lorraine, and Margot. His family will forever remember him as the greatest man who ever lived.
George’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service on Friday, January 17th, at 3:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1390 Hanz Drive, New Braunfels, TX. A Ceremony of Military Honors will start promptly at 3:00 on the lawn followed by the memorial service in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the George A. Steurer Memorial Engineering Scholarship, accessible at the link below. This scholarship will help fund the education of the students that his son Keith teaches at Snow College.
