Gregg Van de Loo was a beloved husband of 42 years to Sylvia Van de Loo, a devoted father and stepfather, proud grandfather and brother and respected law enforcement leader. He passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease Sunday, March 1, 2026 surrounded by his family.
He will be remembered not only for an extraordinary career, but for the strength, integrity, and incredible love he had for his family.
A graduate of Wisconsin State University, Gregg began his law enforcement career in 1967 and graduated from the FBI Academy in 1969 as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During 27 distinguished years, he served as a firearms instructor, bank robbery investigator, and FBI SWAT Team Leader, helping shape early SWAT tactics and train crisis negotiation teams recognized nationally for excellence. Under his leadership, dangerous situations were resolved with courage, discipline, and respect for life.
After retiring in 1997, Gregg Van de Loo continued serving as a reserve officer and instructor with the Alamo Area Council of Governments before returning to duty with the Comal County Sheriff’s Office. He chose to serve on patrol and later became Chief Deputy under Sheriff Bob Holder.
But beyond the badge, Gregg was steady, humble, and deeply loving. He was a protector at home as much as in uniform — a man whose presence brought respect, admiration and trust to whomever he encountered.
Gregg will be profoundly missed and forever respected.
From his wife: “That contagious laugh of yours was my favorite sound in the world. It still echoes in my heart. Thank you for loving me the way you did — fully, deeply, and without hesitation. I miss you more than words can ever say.”
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Vande Loo; his children, Bryan Van de Loo and wife Cindy, Kimberly Lindley and husband David; and Leslie Bendele; grandchildren, Erin (husband, Cameron), Zoe, Zachary, Bailey, Dustin, and Kameryn; and great-grandchildren Klyde and McCoy. Gregg is also survived by his brothers, Harley Van de Loo and Robert Van de Loo.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 13, 2026, at 2:30 PM at Zoeller Funeral Home, 615 Landa St. New Braunfels, TX 78130. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
