Johnny Dion Villareal, 82, of the Texas Hill Country, passed away on May 9, 2026. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Johnny lived a vibrant, music-filled life marked by talent, hard work, creativity, and a deep love for family and friends.
From an early age, music was Johnny’s passion. He attended W.G. Smiley Junior High, where he proudly played in the Jr. Deputy band, and later marched with the band at M.B. Smiley High School. A gifted musician, he mastered the trumpet, guitar, and drums. He was also an outstanding dancer who was selected to appear on the national television show American Bandstand. As he often said, he loved to “cut a rug.”
In high school, Johnny met the love of his life, Patsy Ann Gammage. They married in 1961 and spent more than six decades together, raising two daughters: Lisa Renee (born 1962) and Dana Lynn (born 1964).
While working a day job, Johnny played drums and sang with the popular Houston band The Rhythm Rockers. In 1963, he graduated from the Norris of Houston Barber Academy and began a remarkable 60-year career as a master hairstylist. His elite clientele included stars such as John Wayne, Mia Farrow, and Andre Previn, as well as many international dignitaries.
In the early 1970s, Johnny and Patsy moved to League City, Texas, where they opened the upscale salon “Today’s Image.” Their vision turned the business into a thriving destination that offered cutting-edge styles, a full team of stylists, and their own line of hair care products. Johnny’s chair was known not only for precision cuts and styles, but for the laughter, jokes, and warm conversation that made every client feel like family. Many remained loyal to him for decades.
In retirement, Johnny and Patsy fulfilled another dream by moving to the beautiful Texas Hill Country near Gruene. There, surrounded by the places and people he loved, Johnny often reflected on his blessed and completely fulfilled life.
Johnny is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Patsy Villareal; daughter Dana Villareal-Jensen and son-in-law Douglas Jensen; son-in-law Chris Fredericksen; grandson Devyn Jensen and his wife Savannah; and great-grandson Stetson Jensen. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lisa Renee.
He will be deeply missed by his family, countless friends, and the many loyal clients whose lives he touched with skill, humor, and kindness.
Johnny was truly “one heck of a guy.”
