Larry Phil Gunn (Butch) passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 83. He was born in San Angelo, Texas in 1940 to Thomas Lee and Verna Mirl Gunn. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Barbara De Los Santos, and his wife Joann H. Gunn. He is survived by his son John (Wes) Gunn, his granddaughters Kathryn and Storm; His daughter, Tomasina Whisenant, and his granddaughters Lindsey, and Kaitlyn; his nephew Tommy Love and his great nieces Cassandra and Rebecca, and his niece Margo De Los Santos.
Larry’s work life was multifaceted. He spent many years working with structural forms as a draftsman. He also drove 18 wheelers across the country (and took a lot of pictures along the way). Larry and his wife, JoAnn co-owned The Barbarossa Trough, a small country bar in Geronimo, Texas. Larry never met a stranger.
From the start of his life, Larry loved the outdoors. He often spent time on “the ranch” with his large extended family, hunting and fishing, and participating in Gun Clubs and Archery contests. He was also a skilled woodworker/carpenter. He “was always putting something together”. During his later years, at his home in New Braunfels, “Mr. Larry” entertained his cul-de-sac neighbors with his attitude and antics; dictating and delegating when they tried to help him with chores around the house. As Larry’s health declined, he didn’t feel much like “putting things together” anymore, but he never lost the love for outdoors. He could most always be found, wearing his felt fedora hat and his green suspenders, asleep on his porch.
Special Thanks to: Dr. Mark A. Burns, MD and staff, Mercy House New Braunfels, and Hope Hospice of New Braunfels for all the advice and wonderful compassionate care they offered during Larry’s time of need; Also, to Melinda and all the good folks of “Sunshine Peak Cul-de-sac”. You were the eyes, ears, hands and hearts that watched over Larry when we couldn’t. You all were the reasons he was able to enjoy his own home as long as he did. God Bless you all.
