Lou was born in Galveston, Texas on 14 May 1938 to Louis E. and Pauline Frenzel. He acquired his HAM radio license (W5TOM) in 1952, and married Joan McEldowney on 25 October 1957. So armed with the two passions of his life, he embarked on a fearless professional career. Combining his love of electronics with a talent for communicating, he worked as an engineer, executive, author and teacher. Ever the applied scientist, he was most happy using his knowledge to teach others. A true pioneer of the Information Age, through his time as a professor, his 20 books, and countless magazine articles, he has helped to train the army of technicians, engineers and computer scientists who have delivered our world of handheld computers and effortless worldwide communication. But of his professional achievements, he most valued the personal connections with his students and readership.
All the while he and Joan enjoyed good food, good wine, good beaches, and long laughs with good friends and family. His intellectual curiosity, easy laughter and generous insight lasted all his days. His contributions to technology and his love for Joan will outlast us all.
He is survived by his wife and life-long friend Joan; children Louis Frenzel III, Ann Powell, John Frenzel, and Sallie Frenzel; son-in-law Glenn Powell; siblings Judy Crane, Jeanne Gibson and Mark Frenzel; 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Louis' memory may be made to Austin Community College, https://www.austincc.edu/offices/acc-foundation.
