Louis A. Koenig, of New Braunfels, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 28, 2018. He was a loving husband of 63 years to his wife Dorothy. Louis was born near Melrose Community in Goliad County, Texas to Anton Louis and Sophie Walch Koenig on May 20, 1930. Louis, like his siblings, was born on the family farm under modest circumstances and grew up living in a two room farmhouse with three sisters and four brothers. Like many of the farming families at the time they dabbled in a lot of different enterprises, but growing cotton was their main stay.
Louis landed a job as a roughneck in the oil field but soon was called to serve his country in the Korean War in 1952. He served as a Corporal with the I Corp/8thArmy, 159th Field Artillery, C (Charlie) Battery, Chief of Section #1 gun (155mm Howitzer) in support of the Marines on the front line in Korea. After an honorable discharge in 1953, he returned home to marry the love of his life, Dorothy Ressmann on January 24, 1954. Louis moved his family to New Braunfels in 1956 and started a career working in textiles for Comal Cottons. In 1969 Louis started on a new career working home construction for Alfred Seidel. In 1972 he joined Kendal Oberkamp Construction and helped restore many homes affected by the flood of 1972, along with building new homes in area. Leaving the construction business, Louis once again found himself in the weaving industry and worked for Kytex/Hexel as a supervisor, weaving, materials for Kelvar vests, boats, etc. He later retired in 1991. Louis hadn’t retired for long when he started working for Eden Home, where he helped to maintain the homes in Eden Village, as well as gardening the grounds. After Louis’ retirement in 2005, he and Dorothy enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with his daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who fondly called him Pa.
Louis never met a stranger and he was blessed with a green thumb and a love for all plant life, which was so evident by all the lovely gardens he tended. He was a member of Cross Lutheran Church, where through the years he served as an elder, usher, and greeter.
Louis was preceded in death by the love of his life, Dorothy and his son Mitchell Louis Koenig. He is survived by his daughter, Tyra K. Moore and husband Jim of New Braunfels; grandchildren, Lacey Washington and husband Jason of New Braunfels, Alissa Sommers and husband Chris of Seguin, and Lauren Williams and husband Evan of Austin; and 5 great-grandchildren, Noah Lara, Hunter Sommers, Easton Sommers, Jaxson Washington, and Jayla Washington; brother, Leroy Koenig and wife Marie of Yorktown; brother, Melvin Koenig and wife Peggy of Victoria; sister, Elizabeth Mason of Schertz; sister, Estella Muschalek of Gillette; and sister, Aleen Stevenson and husband Walter of Montgomery, Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.
