Roslyn Louise Gilman, 81, passed away on December 22, 2018 in New Braunfels, Texas. Roslyn Louise was a seventh generation Californian, born to Arnold P. Springer and Roslyn L. Ortega in Taft, California. She was a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she served on the Stephens Independent Association and the Pillsbury Hall Council. After graduating from Stephens, she attended Long Beach State College and served as Vice-President of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She was honored to be inducted into the Golden Circle of Sigma Kappa for fifty years of membership. While living and studying in Long Beach, she met a handsome fellow Californian, her future husband, James D. Gilman. Mr. Gilman was a proud graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York.
Roz was musically and artistically gifted and enjoyed all the arts. She was involved with the Cristobal Theater Company in the Panama Canal Zone. She was active with the Chocolate Bayou Theater Company in Alvin, Texas and the Alvin Community College Theater. Roz loved nature and was active with both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of Alvin and as a park volunteer at Brazos Bend State Park. She dearly treasured all the special life-long friends she made during this time.
Her love of music and nature were fulfilled in her years in New Braunfels, where she could see her favorite performer, Seth James, perform at Gruene Hall or sit quietly with nature in Landa Park. Roz loved living her golden years with her family and friends in New Braunfels, and treasured the gift of being able to watch her four beloved grandchildren grow up.
Additionally, her family is most grateful for the years of medical care and support from Dr. Jacks, Dr. Farrah and their staffs, the staff at New Braunfels Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, the encouragement from all her occupational, physical and speech therapists, Elaine, her daughter -in- law, and the compassion from the nursing staffs at Christus Santa Rosa New Braunfels and Hope Hospice in her last days.
Most profoundly, the way in which she lived her life after her stroke and the loss of normal speech was a testament to her faith in God. She accepted this new chapter of her life by utilizing the Holy gift of fortitude. She was determined to carry on, despite the many medical challenges she encountered. She did this with humor and always inspiring others, that everything will be “ok”. Remarkably, she personified “Acta Non Verba” , “Actions Not Words”, which is significant, for it was her late husband’s personal favorite saying and the motto from his alma mater at the USMMA. Though she initially suffered great sorrow at the loss of her speech, through the years, she always was hopeful and positive. For it was her actions and her bright smile alone, that said more than any words could ever properly convey.
Roslyn is preceded in death by her husband, Captain James D. Gilman. Roslyn is survived by her son, Jim Gilman and his wife, Dr. Elaine Gwosdz- Gilman, her daughter, Ros”Lynn” Gilman, her grandchildren: Anastazia Gilman, Lauren Gilman, James F. Gilman and Jonathan P. Gilman, her loving sister-in-law Mary and her daughter, Francesca.
