Ruby Nell (Goss) Morton passed away from this life into the presence of God on January 8, 2014. She was born on September 1, 1933 and was preceded in death by her parents, Hollis and Verlie Goss, and her daughter, Stacy Morton Schmeltekopf.
Born and raised in Boaz, AL, Nell married her high school sweetheart, Bill Morton, and began a 61-year love story. Their relationship was a living example of a Godly marriage that was as strong yesterday as it was in 1952. Living their early years in Auburn, AL and West Germany while Bill served his years in the military, they eventually settled in Lindale, GA. Nell was an avid gardener in those years; being involved in community beautification projects and floral competitions as well as raising two children.
In 1976, following Bill’s relocation to Mission Valley Textiles, Nell brought her southern hospitality and energy to New Braunfels. She quickly built deep relationships through community and church involvement. Long before the Internet and Google Maps, Nell used her inquisitive and caring personality, a phone book and city map to know more about New Braunfels than most natives. She was a volunteer at McKenna Hospital for many years and supported Bill in his involvement with the Chamber of Commerce.
Nell’s true passion and impact was in serving at Oakwood Baptist Church. Nell and family were charter members of the church in 1981. Her love of Christ and concern for people helped develop the church’s early focus on mission work and outreach to the lost that still thrives today. She held many leadership roles throughout her 25 active years of service. But her greatest impact was behind the scenes through individual relationships that truly changed people’s lives. She had a spiritual gift of making people feel loved and important.
Nell is survived by her husband Bill, son Mark Morton and wife Sharon, granddaughter Maggie Schmeltekopf, and son-in-law James Schmeltekopf and wife Nadine along with numerous other family members and a host of close friends.
The family will be receiving visitors Sunday January 12th from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the Rio Terra Senior Living Center.
A memorial service will be held on January 13th at 11:00 am at Oakwood Baptist Church.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be given to the Oakwood Baptist Church designated towards the building fund or Kids Club.
