Susan was born June 29th, 1945 in San Francisco to William and Patricia Shaw and lived in California until retiring in Arizona, and then to Texas-with her husband, Gene Helbing of 34 years.
Susan and Gene spent many years doing what they loved- bowling, gardening, and listening to Country Music with a dog or two by their sides.
Susan was a wife, a mother, and grandmother, and loved talking about her children and grandchildren any chance she got.
Susan was so kind and giving with a firm belief in community service. She was a Cancer Society volunteer driver for over 30 years, spent many years as a hospital volunteer, all while being a consistent blood donor. The last several years she was a driver for Meals on Wheels in New Braunfels, Texas. She touched many lives, especially in her routes getting to know people and making sure they got a warm meal, a pleasant conversation and the gift of them knowing someone cared.
If Susan sensed someone was going through a tough time- she would think of something personal and inspirational, take out her fancy paper, and use her talent of calligraphy to make them a personal note. She truly wanted to help others and did so, without fanfare, because she loved doing it. Susan will be dearly missed.
Susan is survived by: Her loving husband, Gene Helbing, sisters Nancy Firm and Kathy Ruiz, and brother John Michael Doyle; Her cousins Stan Price, and Jane Hill; Her son Philip Decker and his wife Nelly, and grandchildren Allison, Anthony, and Emily; Her son Scott Decker and grandchildren Michael, Eric, and Melissa; Her daughter Gina Ochoa and husband Jose, and grandchildren Antonio, Lauren, and Joseph; Her son Tony Decker and grandchild John, and her son Adam Decker; Her stepson Erik Helbing, and stepdaughter, Cory Dent.
