Virginia Marie Hurt, 77, of New Braunfels, Texas, passed away on April 19, 2025 surrounded by her husband and children. A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Ginny, will always be remembered for her laughter and happy nature.
Born on March 26, 1948, in Omaha, Nebraska, she was the only daughter of Homer and Marie Hoxie and sister to her only brother, Homer. The family lived on a small farm in Ashland and in Ginny’s childhood they moved to Lincoln. Her mother always called her Virginia, but by the time she was a teenager, her chosen nickname, Ginny, stuck.
Ginny graduated from Lincoln East High School, attended the University of Nebraska, and earned a bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University with a major in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Home Economics. Additionally, she received her teaching certificate at BYU. She taught pre-kindergarten and high school home economics. Ginny worked as a bank teller in Maryland. She was a Children’s Librarian in Maryland and Texas. She also enjoyed working in a quilt shop in New Braunfels. She loved to sew and quilt, making clothing for her four daughters and quilts for children and grandchildren.
While in Lincoln, Ginny was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the church the remainder of her life. Ginny learned to play the piano at 10 years old. She played the piano and the organ accompanying church services and many musical performances all her life. She taught piano out of her home and while in Africa, taught many church members to play.
On April 17, 1973, Ginny married the love of her life and Silly Goose, George, in the Provo Temple for time and all eternity. All because of a homemade box of cookies, they shared 52 years of marriage, lived in Utah, Maryland, Turkey, Germany, Zaire and Texas, and grew their family to six children and ten grandchildren.
Ginny is survived by her husband, George E. Hurt, Jr., her son, Darrell E. Hurt (Carolyn) of Maryland, her daughters Rachel M. Williams (Cody) of New Braunfels, Barbara K. Knight of Utah, Julie Vancour (Jeremy) of New Braunfels, and Amy M. Garcia (Elias) of Arkansas, as well as her grandchildren Nathan (Emily), Braden, Bethany (Joshua), Andrew, Evelyn, Gillian, Serena, Gwendolyn, Talon and Grace, her brother, Homer A. Hoxie (Kay) and nephews Michael (Karmen), and Steven.
