Irena Figiel

Irena Barbara Figiel, 74, wife of Wojciech Figiel, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children and grandchildren on Friday, February 21, 2025. She was born on June 11, 1950 in Nowogard, Poland to the late Adolf and Feliksa (Ośmańska) Breda. Seeking freedom from communist oppression in Poland, Irena immigrated to the United States in 1983 to forge a new life with her husband and children, ultimately settling in New Britain where she found a welcoming community. Despite the struggles of learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and the pain of leaving family behind, Irena faced every challenge with quiet determination. She worked tirelessly to provide for her children, ensuring they had opportunities she never had. Her unwavering love and resilience became the foundation of the family she cherished so deeply. Irena will be well remembered for her sharp sense of humor—honed by decades of I Love Lucy reruns—and her warm hospitality.

Irena is survived by her husband, her three children: Greg Figiel and his wife, Krystyna, of New Britain, Joanna Gould of Windsor, and Dorota Figiel and her husband, Sean Sperber, of West New York. She also leaves behind four grandchildren—Michael, Melissa, Steven, and Aleksandra—as well as her brother and nephew, Zbigniew and Łukasz Breda, both of Poland.

Relatives and friends may call at the New Britain Memorial-Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain on Thursday, February 27 from 5:00-7:30pm with a funeral service at 7:30pm. Irena will be buried in Słupsk, Poland.

Irena Barbara Figiel, lat 74, żona Wojciecha Figiel, odeszła spokojnie w otoczeniu swoich dzieci i wnuków w piątek, 21 lutego 2025 roku. Urodziła się 11 czerwca 1950 roku w Nowogardzie w Polsce jako córka śp. Adolfa i Feliksy (z domu Ośmańska) Breda.

Pragnąc uwolnić się spod komunistycznych represji w Polsce, Irena wyemigrowała do Stanów Zjednoczonych w 1983 roku, aby wraz z mężem i dziećmi rozpocząć nowe życie. Ostatecznie osiedliła się w New Britain, gdzie znalazła serdeczną społeczność. Mimo trudności związanych z nauką nowego języka, przystosowaniem się do odmiennej kultury oraz bólem wynikającym z rozłąki z rodziną, Irena z niezwykłą determinacją stawiała czoła wszystkim wyzwaniom. Pracowała niestrudzenie, aby zapewnić swoim dzieciom możliwości, których sama nigdy nie miała. Jej niezachwiana miłość i siła stały się fundamentem rodziny, którą tak bardzo ceniła.

Irena zostanie zapamiętana za swoje błyskotliwe poczucie humoru, kształtowane po latach powtórek I Love Lucy, oraz za swoją serdeczną gościnność.

Pozostawiła pogrążonego w żałobie męża oraz troje dzieci: Grzegorza Figiel i jego żonę Krystynę z New Britain, Joannę Gould z Windsor oraz Dorotę Figiel i jej męża Sean Sperber z West New York. Irena była także ukochaną babcią czworga wnucząt: Michała, Melissy, Stevena i Oli. W Polsce pozostawiła również brata Zbigniewa i bratanka Łukasza Bredę.

Rodzina i przyjaciele mogą oddać hołd Irenie w New Britain Memorial-Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain, w czwartek, 27 lutego, w godzinach 17:00-19:30, po czym o 19:30 odbędzie się nabożeństwo żałobne.
