Catherine McCarthy

Catherine "Cappy" McCarthy of New City entered into eternal life on July 17, 2012. Catherine was born February 19, 1933 in New York, NY to Peter J. and Catherine (Burke) Burns. She has been a Rockland resident for over 50 years. Cappy was a graduate of Villa Maria Academy, Bronx, NY and went to work for Smith Barney as a Sales Assistant and later worked for the County of Rockland in the Department of Finance and Personnel. She was an avid college basketball fan and lived for March Madness. Cappy coached the St. Augustine's girls CYO Basketball team in the 1960's and led them to win a Championship. She was a parishioner of St. Augustine's Church in New City and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Cappy's greatest joy came from spending time with her granddaughters who lovingly called her "Hoot Nanny".

Cappy is survived by her children Frank McCarthy of New City, Ellen Gruffi and her husband Bill of New City, Kevin McCarthy and his wife Theresa of New City, Chrissy McCarthy of West Seneca NY; her grandchildren Elizabeth and Kathleen Gruffi, Kara, Julie and Nora McCarthy; her siblings Mary Ann Burns of Nanuet NY and Peter Burns and his wife Mary Lou of Ossining NY. She is predeceased by her former husband, Francis J. McCarthy in 1995.

Friends may call today 7-9pm and Friday 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered Saturday, 10am at St. Augustine's Church, New City, NY. Burial to follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Nanuet, NY. Donations can be made in Cappy's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital .
