Christopher Downey passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, surrounded by the love of his family.
Christopher was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a loving family man, and a man of deep and unwavering faith. He lived his life with kindness, humility, compassion, and quiet strength. His faith was a source of great comfort to him, and he shared that sense of peace generously with those around him.
Christopher was born in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, to Mark and Julia Downey, one of six siblings: Matty, Mícheál (deceased), Catherine (deceased), Sheila, and Mary. He later immigrated to New York, where he met the love of his life, Mary A. Forde, originally from Lahardane, Co. Mayo, at an Irish dance. Together they built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and family, raising four children: Colette, Mark, Noel, and Brendan.
Christopher and Mary first made their home in Elmhurst, Queens, before settling in New City, where they lived for more than 60 years as part of a close-knit community. Christopher worked for the New York City MTA for over 33 years, beginning as a bus driver and
eventually rising to head of scheduling for two New York City boroughs.
He was a proud and loving grandfather to his eleven grandchildren—Kayleigh, Erica, Mark, Jack, Bryan, Christopher, Terence, Patrick, Grace, Liam, and Aine—each of whom brought him immense joy. He was also a cherished father-in-law to Liz, Kathy, and Stacey,
welcoming each into the family with love.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Vida, Jessica, and Cassandra. Their compassion and support brought comfort to Christopher and his entire family.
Christopher held a deep love for Ireland, especially Kilkenny. His passion for hurling was infectious, and through him, many learned the phrase “Up the Cats.” He was dearly loved by his many in-laws, including Peggy, May, Tom, Sean, John, and by Mary’s family—Nora,
Anne, Jim, Anne, Noreen and the many that predeceased him. “Uncle Christy” was cherished by nieces and nephews across the globe for his warmth, humor, and steady presence.
Christopher had a gentle way about him—a calm and reassuring presence that made others feel safe, heard, and cared for. He expressed love not through grand gestures, but throughconsistency, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to his family.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and in God’s care.
Wake services will be held on Friday, April 17, at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 13 Lake Road, Congers, NY. 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 18, at 10:00
a.m. at St. Augustine’s Church, New City, followed by burial at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet.
May the road rise up to meet him,
may the wind be always at his back,
may the sun shine warm upon his face,
and the rains fall soft upon his fields.
And until we meet again,
may God hold him in the palm of His hand.
