He was born on August 20, 1933, in Utica, New York. He developed a love for theatre, performing in summer stock productions, and enjoyed English literature. He attended Utica College of Syracuse University, where he earned his bachelor's degree, and New York City College, where he earned his master's degree in English.
In 1957 Lanny married Lois Mary Owen, and the couple relocated from Utica to Rockland County to be closer to New York City, for Lanny to pursue a dream of becoming a stage actor. The couple had four children. Although Lanny and Lois parted ways in 1975, they remained dedicated to their children.
Lanny became an English teacher at Spring Valley Junior High School before moving on to inspire countless students as a teacher at Rockland Community College where he taught English, Speech, and Semantics and led RCC's successful debate team. His animated and thought-provoking teaching style made him a favorite among students and colleagues. Lanny retired after 30 years but continued to teach as an adjunct professor until the age of 80.
Lanny was known as a charismatic storyteller, sharing hilarious tales about his life and his opinions on politics. His love for nature, particularly the Hudson River, was a defining aspect of his life. He enjoyed sailing, kayaking, and hiking in the Hudson Valley. Evenings were spent listening to jazz music, playing the flute, and admiring the views of the Hudson from his home in Haverstraw NY. He created abstract ink sketches of landscapes and portraits, later adding computerized color to his images. He developed a passion for wood carving, spending countless hours carving driftwood into intriguing sculptures.
Lanny's pride and joy were his children, with whom he shared deep and abiding love. He had an extraordinary bond with his son John, who has Down syndrome.
