Lucy Lanese of New City, N.Y., lived 102 years blessed by the love of a large, close-knit Italian family and many friends. She believed that family and love were simply the most important priorities in life and with that mindset, joy and happiness would follow. Lucy was born on November 13, 1920 to Lorenzo and Maria (Mitertondo) D’Erasmo. She was raised in Bronx, N.Y.,the ninth born of fourteen brothers and sisters who later raised their respective families all within two miles of one another. She had fond memories of Noble Avenue where“family was always there for each other.”Lucy met George Lanese, married, and created a beautiful environment where love, family and a good work ethic was all they needed to raise their three children, Lorraine, Joey and Larry. Their home on Pugsley Avenue was one where brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews would visit for coffee and pastry, swim in their three-foot deep pool,or play shuffleboard in the yard that her husband George and his brothers-in-law enjoyed creating.“More hands made lighter work”and Lucy found joy in doing her part.
Lucy was a loving mother, proud grandmother and super fun great-grandmother (GG). She was an integral part of each family member’s life. She never missed an important occasion and was always there for daily conversations, laughs and encouraging words. Lucy enjoyed beautiful and fun-filled relationships with her daughter Lorraine, and sons Joey and Larry who, with their spouses, filled her life with joy after the early passing of her husband. Her grandchildren always felt like she was their biggest fan and had many laughs together. Through the years, Lucy’s friends played a large role in her life and travel unexpectedly became a new passion-touring Italy, riding a camel in Africa and participating in a cruise fashion show were just a few examples. She inspired family for years with her resilience to life’s curve balls and desire to live joyfully.
Lucy left this world peacefully at home on May 5, 2023 surrounded by family. On this day, she joined her beloved husband George and devoted son Joe in heaven. Lucy is survived by her daughter and son-in law Lorraine and Bernard DiNardi, daughter-in-law Evelyn Lanese, and son and daughter-in-law Larry Lanese and Tish McHugh. She will be greatly missed by her five grandchildren, Renee and Mike Marusic, Cindy and Stephen Morante, George Lanese, Joe Lanese and Andrea Mitchell, and Michael and Trisha Lanese. GG loved her eight great-grandchildren, Julia, Addison, Brandon, Mackenzie, Joseph, T.J., Connor and Avery “not a little, but a Big-Big Bunch,” which she always displayed by opening her arms wider and wider while giving them a cute smile and enticing them to do the same. Her love and happiness will live on in their hearts forever.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 9th from 3-7 PM at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 10th at 10 AM at The Church of St. Augustine, New City, N.Y.
