Michael Peter Gallagher

Michael P. Gallagher of New City, 86 years old, passed away on March 25, 2019. Michael was born in New York City to Thomas and Helen (nee Wynne) Gallagher on June 4, 1932. He was one of eight children, brother to Thomas, Peter, John, James, Theresa, Anna, and Helen.

Michael was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean war as an artillery mechanic in Japan. After leaving the service he began his career in construction, working in New York for Wire Lathers Union Local 46. Michael married his wife Eleanor in 1959 and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this June. In 1963 they moved to New City, where they raised their three children Michael, Kelly, and Timothy. He was an active member in the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Michael loved his country, proudly displaying the American flag at his home, on his car, on his hats and on his lapel.

His joy of sports revolved around golf, hockey and football. Michael’s love of hockey inspired him to develop the Clarkstown Roller Hockey League in the 1970’s. He was an avid fan of the N.Y. Rangers and the N.Y. Giants.

His greatest retirement pastime was watching his grandchildren participate in their sporting events. He was their number one fan, showing up at every possible event.

Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Eleanor, his two sons, Michael (Kathy) of Pinebush N.Y., Timothy of Nyack, N.Y. and daughter Kelly (Edward) Neeck of Pearl River, NY. His is also survived by is beloved sister Anna (Jerry) Popper of Manolopan NJ. His is survived by his loving grandchildren, Matthew (Kaitlin), Kate and Brianne Gallagher, Kyle and Connor Neeck, and great grandchildren, Finnian and Maeve Gallagher. Michael was also a loving surrogate grandfather to Ryan, Brendan and Lindsay Zohar. He will be greatly missed by all.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, 10am, at St. Augustine’s Church, New City, NY followed by interment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.
