December 21, 1939 – June 7, 2025
It is with profound sorrow that the Maturin family announces the passing of our beloved Alvin J. Maturin, affectionately known as "Motch." On Saturday, June 7, 2025, surrounded by love, Motch gently departed this earthly life. In a moment of grace and tenderness, he called his wife Judy into the room and asked her to hold him—and as they embraced, he peacefully closed his eyes and journeyed on to his eternal rest. He was 85 years old.
Motch was born on December 21, 1939, in rural Iberia Parish to the late Wiltz and Evelie Trahan Maturin. His life changed forever one night in May 1959 at Casablanca in New Iberia, where he first laid eyes on a beautiful young woman named Judy Migues. He asked her for a date, and by December he had asked her to marry him. The following May, they were united in Holy Matrimony. Over the next 66 years, Motch and Judy shared a remarkable journey of love, faith, and family.
Together they raised three children—Derk, Christy, and Gina—whom they lovingly referred to as their “gems.” Motch was a devoted husband and father, quietly shaping their lives with kindness, humility, and steady strength. As Judy often said, he was a man of few words, but his actions and presence spoke volumes. His calm demeanor and generous spirit were constants in the lives of those who loved him. His favorite saying, “You gotta take it as it comes,” was not just advice—it was the way he lived.
Motch worked in the oil and gas industry with Schlumberger for over 30 years, building a respected career marked by integrity and dedication. He retired at the age of 55 and fully embraced the joys of retirement, spending his days doing what he loved—hunting, bowling, gardening, and working field trials with his beagles. He could often be found feeding ducks at City Park or enjoying a tennis match with his grandchildren. He also gave generously of his time to others, serving as a girls’ softball coach, a Eucharistic Minister, and a counselor with church youth organizations and the Young Christians.
Dancing with Judy was one of his greatest joys. Whether it was rock & roll, French music, or square dancing, their love was always in step. He found great happiness in sharing his love of gardening with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will fondly remember picking blackberries and vegetables under his patient guidance.
Motch passed as he lived—quiet, gentle, and deeply loved. While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in the belief that he is not lost to us, but has gone ahead, and that we will one day be reunited in God’s eternal embrace.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Judy Migues Maturin; his children, Derk Maturin (Dawn), Christy LaBry (Justin), and Gina Daigle (Orsen Jr.); his grandchildren, Haley Pendley (Bradley), Drake LaBry, Keegan LaBry (Karina), Katie Dupuy (Colby), Logan Daigle (Whitney); and his beloved great-grandchildren, Christen Pendley, Aidan Pendley, Gavin Stevens, Gabbie Stevens, Grace Stevens, Grady Dupuy, Emilia LaBry, John Henry LaBry, Rose Marie Daigle, and Lilly Mae LeJeune.
Motch is preceded in death by his parents, Wiltz and Evelie Maturin; his grandson, Brandon Michael Maturin; his brothers, Albert and Wilbert Maturin; his brother-in-law, Kim Migues; his in-laws, Oswald and Rose Babineaux Migues; and his faithful poodle, Romeo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church. Rev. Ed Degeyter, a cherished friend of the Maturin family, will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Family Mausoleum.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Evangeline Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 10, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the recitation of the Rosary at 5:30 p.m. led by the Men's Rosary Group. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Derk Maturin, Orsen Daigle, Justin LaBry, Gavin Stevens, Logan Daigle, Keegan LaBry, and Drake LaBry.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Motch’s caregivers—Jamie Lombard, Margaret Jones, and Chimyra Singleton—for their compassion, dedication, and the love they gave so freely. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
