NEW IBERIA – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Henry A. “Hank” Fontenot at 10:00 am Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Fr. Richard Broussard will be the celebrant. Mr. Hank will be laid to rest at Holy Family Mausoleum with Military honors by the Iberia Veterans Honor Guard.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm with the Rosary being recited at 6:30 pm. Visiting hours will resume on Wednesday from 8:00 am until 9:30 am.
Henry Allen Fontenot was born March 18, 1939 in New Iberia to the late Augusta Fontenot and the late Ouida Brown Fontenot; and passed away peacefully Sunday, February 25, 2018 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Fontenot, known by family and friends as “Hank” was a veteran of the United States Army. He received specialized training as a radio operator in Massachusetts and was sent to the Aleutian Islands where he was responsible for monitoring the Russian forces. After returning to New Iberia, Mr. Hank worked with Dresser Atlas, but eventually began working with his Father-in-law at Darby Motors. He and his wife Gloria have operated the business successfully for past 44 years.
Hank was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where he served as a Lector and formerly on the church parish council. Professionally, Mr. Hank was a founding member and past president of the Towing and Recovery Professionals of Louisiana. Mr. Hank was a friend to many in New Iberia and had a generous heart. But it was his love and dedication to his wife and family were most important to him, and he leaves a legacy of love that will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Gloria Darby Fontenot; his three children, Michael B. Fontenot and companion Johanna Pellegrin, Joel C. Fontenot and wife Joyce and Maria Fontenot Richard and husband Chris; seven grandchildren, Brandon Albritton, Morgan Fontenot, Mikayla Borel, Kelly Fontenot, Max Borel, Audra Richard and Bailey Richard; two great grandchildren, Carter and Mason Bourque; his brothers-in-law, Alton Darby, Jr. and wife Patsy and Rayland Hargrave, Sr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Hargrave.
Serving as pallbearers are Mike Fontenot, Joel Fontenot, Brandon Albritton, Max Borel, Chris Richard and Sidney Barrilleaux. Honorary pallbearers are Alton Darby, Jr. Rayland Hargrave, Kenny LeJeune and Darryl Romero.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Fontenot’s Name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memorial and Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Acadian Hospice, 458 Heymann Boulevard, Building A, Lafayette, LA 70503.
