Joe was born on February 1, 1948, in Ravensburg, Germany, the son of Marie Kosztala-Wozniak, and Fedor Kosztala. The second oldest of eight children, Joe immigrated to the US with his parents and four siblings.
Joe is survived by his wife Eileen of Mystic, their daughter Olivia, his daughter Katrina Pouliot (Nathan) and his son Josef Kosztala (Brittany). He was a proud Dziadek to three grandchildren, Andrew, Bronson and Minka. Joe is also survived by his mother, Maria Wozniak; three brothers, Jan Kosztala, Stephen Kosztala (Connie), and Edward Kosztala (Bethany; three sisters, Kristina Cutler (William), Stephanie Zeitlar, and Jacqueline Bailey, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Fedor Kosztala, and oldest brother Marion Kosztala.
Joe was admired for his love and respect of nature, being an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He frequently travelled to Long Island for work, where he began the hobby of wine-tasting. He lived a rich, full life enjoying many days as a rugby player (known to his team as Two Minute Joe), golfer, and poker player. He was just as well known for his big bear hugs as he was for creating unique jewelry. One of Joe’s proudest moments was when he won a Connecticut weightlifting competition.
He graduated from New London High School in 1967 and served his country as a decorated Sgt. In the Air Force. He was recently honored with a Wartime Service Medal for his valor in Vietnam by the State of Connecticut Veteran’s Affairs. Joe worked for many years at Electric Boat as a QC inspector. Following his time at EB, he worked at iTi/Mistras of Waterford.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 20th, from 2-4pm at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London. Military honors will be held at 3:45pm during calling hours.
