Charles (Charlie) L Smith passed away after a long fight with heart disease on March 1st, 2012 in the presence of friends and family at Canon Hospice outside of New Orleans, La. He was born in Mobile, Al on September 9th, 1942 and moved to the 6th ward of Slidell La. in 1949. Charlie leaves behind a colorful political legacy as a powerful lobbyist for the construction industry followed by a second more diverse career representing the arts, the environment, and many other causes near to his heart. When his career took a tumble due to his love of the good life, he spent a few years as a street poet in the French Quarter and returned politics in with a different purpose. He was most proud of his fights for what he termed ³formerly lost causes.²He was a fisherman, a hunter, and an LSU fanatic. He lived life to the fullest in all ways and was able to see his career honored through his induction into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame in 2011. He left us too soon but no one could say he left anything undone. For those wishing to pay their respects, the service will be at Jacob Schoen & Son funeral home on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 with Visitation begging at 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and then a service held in the chapel at 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS).
