

B. Bernie Herron, physician, psychoanalyst and loving father, died from complications of heart disease in the early morning hours of Friday, August 30, 2024 at Weill Cornell Medical Center. Bernie was surrounded in love by his adoring and grateful family. For 68 years Bernie engaged tirelessly in his work, and was loved and admired by his family, friends, colleagues and patients. He was involved in his work up until the time of his death.
Bernie was born in the Bronx on March 1, 1931 to Max and Helen Herskovitz, and attended Bronx High School of Science, graduating in 1948. He studied at New York University for undergraduate and medical school education, graduating in 1951 and 1955, respectively. He completed his medical internship at Indiana University Medical Center in 1956. Bernie served in the United States Air Force as Captain from 1957-1959, stationed at Eglin AFB in Florida. In 1961, he completed his psychiatric residency at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. He trained as a Fellow at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute in 1966 and remained an active member for 58 years.
From 1956 until 1972 Bernie was married to Judith Herron, with whom he had three children, Jonathan, Nan and Daniel. In 1981 he married Susan Herron, who predeceased him in 2021, and together they had one daughter, Amy. He is survived by his sister, Judy Kasle of Indianapolis, Indiana, his four children, and his six grandchildren, Micah, Genevieve, Sam, Sarah, Zachary and Alex.
Bernie was a thoughtful and kind man, known for his patience and gentleness. He loved sailing, skiing and being with his family and his dog, Sasha. He had special affection for the tugboats in the river, riding on trains, music of all kinds, the New York City Ballet, pistachio nuts and different kinds of mustard. Until the time of his death, he started his day with a stroll in his beloved Carl Schurz Park.
A private memorial service will be held in the springtime in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, a place dear to his heart.
