

Doris Mendoza Wyman, of Manhattan, died peacefully on December 28, 2022 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Joel Wyman, to whom she was married for 62 years. Doris was born in 1932 in Brooklyn, NY. She was the loving daughter of the late Edna Jesse (Staenton) and Pedro Juan Mendoza. She was predeceased by her brother, John albert Mendoza, whom she loved dearly.
Doris received a BA degree from Hunter College and worked for a time at the New York League for the Hard of Hearing. She later studied at the Art Students League of NY and the Provincetown Workshop. She was a dedicated visual artist throughout her life, with both regional, national, and international exhibitions of her paintings which have been described as “Lyrical abstract works with a unique quality of intimacy.” Doris was an active member of New York Artists Equity Association where she served as vice president from 1992-96. She also served as the Legislation Committee Chair where she represented NYAEA at the annual Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, DC.
She was a member of the American Society of Contemporary Artists as well as the Contemporary Artists Guild. Doris and her husband Joel were very active in theatre and enjoyed attending Broadway productions and were philanthropic supporters of the Actors Fund. They enjoyed and supported the NY Philharmonic, along with many other cultural events and institutions in New York City. Doris and Joel were avid travelers and visited many countries around the world in their time together. Doris lived a full life and is remembered and greatly loved by all who knew her.
A private memorial service and celebration of her life will be planned for later in the year.
