Frank and I grew up together in Manhattan so our friendship goes back to the early fifties.  No one was more fun to be with.  All of us that knew him will greatly miss him.

Franks parents were my godparents, and all while I was growing up, Frank, a decade my senior, struck me as the epitome of cool.  His tie was always tied with flair, he had a way with a cigarette, his pronouncements were filled with wit and insight.  A photograph of him appeared in  (was it?)  Life magazine:  I cut it out and carried it in my wallet for years.

When I think of him, I picture him as a sailor, tanned and sturdy, his craggy features pointed into the wind, contentment flushing his face.  Or else enthroned in his lovely home, surrounded by his children, instructing them in the ways of the world.  And then theres a lasting memory of himself and Delphine in North Carolina, smiling at each other on a couch.

Im so sorry that he is gone.


One experience that I will never forget is taking the helm of Hound, Frank's magnificent yacht, which he once courageously let me take command of in Maine. He was not only a great sailor and father, but a man with a prodigious command of history whose voracious reading, especially of "nose breakers", would be hard for any of us to keep up with. One of the highlights of every Christmas was Christmas eve at his house and the lively, but always amicable, political debates we had, which often went on well into the small hours of Christmas morning.  I will carry many other happy memories of the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
