Hello Vicki,

I just heard the news so I am sorry that this note is so late.  But thankful that I have found a way to reach out to you.  

What can I say?  Though Herb and I stood on different sides of a cultural chasm --- and perhaps would even moreso today(!) --- he was such an influence in my life.   He was my first boss, the first person who gave me a chance to show what I could do.  And he demanded it.  I always remember when I would come to him with an idea, his response would usually be "That's a great idea, Kathy.  Why don't you take it upon yourself to ...."  A very good lesson learned! 

While he frustrated me at times it was only because he forced me to clear up my fuzzy thinking and really understand what I was arguing for or against.  He taught me that I could not just take a stand because of my heart but that I needed to bring in my head as well, another lesson that served me well in the balance of my career...though I have to admit I still start with my heart!   

I remember many good times that we all shared together and I will always treasure those early days of The University Without Walls.

Hi Vickie. It has been a very long time since I was a prof at NYU and did some teaching with the Gallatin”Division”....over 40 years. These years have neither dulled my memory nor respect for Herb. He was a brilliant, generous and supportive friend at a time when his friendship and emotional sustenance could not have been more appreciated. I have yet to meet another person with whom I could disagree on probably every political position while maintaining the warmest of personal regard, respect and appreciation. The passage of time and place not with standing, I will always think of him as a dear and cherished friend.  David Sirota

When I was managing editor of the Staten island Eagle newspaper, I had publicly supported Herb in all his political campaigns, frequently talking with him by phone for years. A couple of years ago, at The King's College, he reminded me of how we had first met in person. After giving  a talk in which he had criticized Mario Cuomo's lack of political acumen, when asked precisely what he had thought was Cuomo's greatest intellectual flaw, he told me that he had noticed I had been the only person to break out in uncontrollable after he had replied, "Pelagianism!"

I will sorely miss him as one of most decent human beings I have had the honor to meet and call a friend.

Dr. Herb London was always very generous to me and anyone that I referred to him with his limited time ever since I first met him in the early 1980s through my then John Jay College faculty colleague Dr. Steve Balch.  My condolence to his wife, children and entire family, as well as to his colleagues and friends.

My wife, Jarmila, and I would like to express our condolences to Herb London's family on his passing.  Although we only met Herb in the last few years as neighbors in Battery Park, we always admired his intelligence, charm, and consistent concern for others.  He was a wonderful man and will be missed.

My sincere condolences to Dr. London's family and friends in this moment of great sorrow.  I was blessed to have had his guidance as a teenager in Manhattan and his teachings live in my mind.  I hope you can find comfort in the beautiful memories you had built over the years and may God bless you all.

My wife,  Dr. Elizabeth Calleja, and I were so very sad to hear of Herb's passing.  We knew Herb through his public service and our involvement in various ventures Herb was associated with.  

 While we have so many memories of wonderful evenings sharing stories and discussing major issues of the day, what stands out was a conference  we attended with Herb and Vicky in London.  We spent quite a bit of time with Herb and Vicky.  The subject that engrossed us most of all was civil liberties in times of war.

We shall miss Herb.  He was admired by so many.  A man of principle.  Though a loss of this type is devastating, we hope his family finds some solace in knowing our thoughts and prayers are with them and that Herb London lived a good life leaving an admirable legacy.
