On Thursday, September 22nd, our mom, Ines Cano, lost her battle with cancer. We are grateful she didn’t suffer long. At the time of her passing, she was resting comfortably and surrounded by her family at home. It brings us great comfort knowing she passed away peacefully.
Ines Cano was a very loving woman who would do anything for anyone without expecting anything in return. She was a great daughter, sister, friend, wife and most of all MOTHER to 4 children. Mom was quite the dreamer and nothing was impossible to achieve in her mind. She proved that by coming to NYC from Colombia, South America by herself in her mid 20’s without speaking a word of English. She was determined to start a new life in the United States. Like most immigrants, once she started working here she sent money to her family in Colombia. Years later, she began bringing over her family, one by one.
Mom was a jack of all trades … anything to keep money flowing our way to pay for necessities, private schools, vacations, birthday parties, Christmas presents and more. She was a housekeeper, Encyclopedia saleswoman, Mary Kay Cosmetics saleswoman, baby sitter and lastly Home Health Aide before she finally retired.
Mom’s number 1 role was to be a great, loving mother and that she was. She made sure we all had our birthdays celebrated and all holidays were made extra special. I can still smell the Christmas cookies, cakes and bread she would bake from scratch. Although she had a rough childhood she made sure we all had the best childhood ever from putting her daughters in ballet classes and her sons in Cub/Boy Scouts. She even snuck her daughters into a hotel where Menudo (famous Latin boy band in the 80’s) was staying while she attended her Mary Kay Cosmetics convention :-) Thank you Mami … you will forever be our QUEEN.
Ines Cano will be remembered by her family, friends and acquaintances as a woman who was caring, loving, sweet, determined, compassionate, understanding, forgiving, and friendly. She was also a devout Catholic whose faith was very important to her. At times she almost seemed angelic when she smiled.
Our mom was full of life and her loved ones were her life. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed. Until we meet again mami …. You will remain in our hearts forever.
