On Monday, February 10th, 2020, Jerome "Romie" Burke made his transition in spirit in New York City at age 67. He was the loving husband to his wife of 42 years, Joy, father to Cathy (John) and grandfather to Emma, Lauren and Sean. He was especially close to nieces and nephews Kristin, Allison, Brendan, Kevin, Ryan, Jeff, Michael, Laura, Tommy, Kerry, Arlene, and many others. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth as well as siblings Paul, Gregory, Peter, Mary, Theresa and John. He is survived by beloved siblings Frank (Alice), Michael (Barbara), Thomas (Rose), Patrick (Janet), Patricia (Sam), Betty (Izzy), Rose, sisters-in-law Laurel, Donna, Suzanne and Eileen and dearest friend Liz.
Romie was one of a kind and impossible to describe in few words. Dressed to the nines for every occasion, Romie brought his heart and soul into every interaction. He lived life out loud and tended to inspire those around him. Whether he was betting on horses at the racetrack, excelling in his job in liquor sales for Empire Merchants, or relaxing with his cherished wife, Joy and two Boston Terriers, Hannah and Penelope in Saratoga, he enjoyed every moment.
Born and raised as one of 14 children on the West Side of Manhattan (he cringed when people called it Hell’s Kitchen), Romie was unlike anyone else. A perfect combination of New Yorker and New Ager, he had a passion for great music, nice clothes, politics, history, film noir and nice people. A great husband, a great brother, a great father and grandfather, a great uncle, a great colleague and friend, Jerome Burke will be missed by all who knew him.
Calling hours will be at Frank Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave. at 81st St. on Sunday, February 16 from 1-4pm and 6-8pm. Memorial service will be at the same location on Monday morning at 10:30am.
Jerome was dedicated to helping the Friends of Saratoga County Animal Shelter to fulfill their mission of helping find permanent loving homes for every shelter animal. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you kindly make a donation to them at, PO Box 788, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. https://www.friendsofscas.org
