

Lillian Bateman Horne was born on February 11, 1928 in Americus, Georgia to Rev. Gaster Bateman and Eva Butts Bateman. She was educated in Americus, Georgia and continued her education in New York with self-improvement courses.
Lillian was born into a pastoral family with eight siblings: Charles Bateman, Marvin Ulysses Bateman, Marie Bateman Gardner, Bessie Bateman Smith, Lillie Mae Bateman Honaker, and the late Robert Bateman, Clarence Bateman and Seaborn Bateman.
Lillian was the devoted mother of Kenny Horne, Brenda Horne, and the late Edward Lee Horne; cherished grandmother of Lori Horne, Koy Horne, Dara Horne Davis, Kenia Horne, Rachel Horne, and Kali Horne; loving great-grandmother of Darcie Davis, Madison Davis, Aiden Davis, Xavier Horne, Grace Horne, Kalin Horne, Carter Horne, and Egypt Horne; and dear aunt of Capri Bateman Johnson, Samantha Bateman,Robert L. Bateman Jr., Archimedes Bateman, Robertsena Bateman, Zawarski Bateman, Dirk Bateman, Therone Bateman, and the late Keith Bateman.
In 1945 Lillian married Edward Lee Horne. After the death of her husband she came to New York to start a new life with her three children. She took up residence on West 84th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues in the Ansonia district. She and her family became members of St. Matthew and St. Timothy Episcopal Church. She was an active member of the church and the community, becoming a polling officer for the Democratic Party. During her life she became a seamstress, entrepreneur, and also a counselor at Hale House for troubled children. She also worked as a home health aide for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York. She served many years as a member in good standing in the Ladies Workers Garment Union. She was considered a woman full of wisdom by those who knew her and called her friend, and many called her mother.
Mother, your son and servant will always love you and miss you, you will never be forgotten. I am who I am because of you. I am blessed to have known you and to have been born into your family and for you to have been my mother.
Mother, Rest in Peace.
