
Dr. Norman Schulman, father, grandfather, and distinguished plastic surgeon, passed away on March 24, 2026. Dr. Schulman was a fixture in both the medical and sailing communities of New York, known for his exceptional skill as a surgeon, his leadership in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery and love of the outdoors especially sailing.
Born in 1939, Dr. Schulman spent his youth in Asbury Park, N.J. He earned his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Tufts University. His career spanned over 4 decades. As Director of Plastic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, he was instrumental in shaping the department and training generations of surgeons. His legacy as a pioneer in the field of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery will be remembered by the countless lives he touched with his work.
A Navy veteran, Dr. Schulman served on the USS Boxer, LPH4 in 1967-68 and in the Naval Reserves for more than 20 years afterward. He was an active member of the New York Yacht Club and Sea Cliff Yacht Club. He enjoyed mentoring young, competitive sailors at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and New York Merchant Marine Academy. He traveled to Bermuda 9 times as the skipper of his own boat and his home is full of sailing trophies. He also loved skiing, motorcycles, fishing, skeet shooting and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Schulman is survived by his children Lori Schulman (Klaus), Barbra Schulman, Carolyn Katz (Neal) and Andrew Schulman (Alison), his stepdaughters Ellice Schwab (Bradley) and Amy Milford (Matthew) and his grandchildren, Aaron, Ian, Kate, Max, Hester, Jacob, Flora, and Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan Schulman, who passed away in 2024.
Dr. Schulman’s passion, dedication to excellence and love of life will be missed by family and friends. His legacy as a leader in both the medical and sailing communities will be felt for years to come.
A service will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 10:30 am. Interment will be at King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton, NJ immediately after.
Shiva will be observed during the following hours at Dr. Schulman’s home in Glen Cove, NY. Thursday evening 6:30pm-8:30pm, Friday 12:00pm-3:00pm, Sunday 1pm – 4pm and 6:30pm – 8:30pm. with Minyan at 7:30 pm. Monday 4:30 pm-8:30 pm with Minyan at 7:30 pm.
