My most heartfelt condolences to Jacquelyn and her family on such a tremendous loss. May he rest peacefully now.  Praying that  fond and happy memories of Richard sustain you  now and minimize your grief. Sending virtual hugs.

There aren't many people who make you put your phone down. Richard was one of them.

I'm glad, I go to knock Richard. I'm glad, over the past few years, my family got to know Richard. I think I'm even more happy about the latter. 

The first time my kids spent real time with him was during an overnight stay at his house. Within hours of us arriving, he was teaching them how to play jump the cracks on sidewalks, letting them watch movies we'd never approve of, just genuinely enjoying their company. He really met the kids where they were...and stayed there for the next few days.

At some point that trip, there was a backyard soccer match with our son. Little man was playing goalie, and Richard put too much air under the ball and accidentally knocked his tooth out. But our boy blocked the goal doing it, and he was so proud he ran straight over to Richard, tooth gone, grinning. 

Richard's response? "Wow, we need to buy you goalie gloves. You're good!" No panic. No offers of ice. No faux concern about a perfectly fine face. Just pure enthusiasm for what little man had done. 

We laughed about it that day. And, as we recall that story, we're laughing again now. 

Later that same visit, Richard pulled me and my wife aside. He told us to cherish our kids at this age. To really take it in. To play catch, play hoops, play games, indulge and be present for the mundane. For a guy who struck us as very black and white, right and wrong about most things, he got sentimental talking about Scott and Jacq when they were young. You could see how much he held onto those years. That conversation changed how we (try to) parent. We think about what he shared constantly.

Richard was one of one. There's never been another person like him. There won't be. And we won't forget him, his hilarious antics with our kids, or his advice. And, yes, we got those goalie gloves. 

To Jacq, Scott, and the entire family, we're thinking about you.

Nothing but love.

We can all hear Uncle Richard's laugh in our minds. 

What a fun uncle I had! I have strong memories of him visiting us in Arizona 45+ years ago and visiting his apartment across from the Natural History Museum. His apartment's interior design was Ralph Lauren Arizona collection - I can picture it like yesterday. He was so good at everything athletic, so good at trivia, and funny jokes. Much younger than my father, I have fond memories of our times together.

I had the pleasure of meeting Richard last year while spending the day with Jacq after a conference in NYC. He had such an unbelievable wit and humor to him despite his circumstances that I’ll never forget. Sending much love and positivity to the family.

Richard and I were housemates at Cornell.  This picture is from April 2010 when we got together in NYC for a mini Cornell reunion

Richard was a brilliant, kindhearted and generous man. I learned so much from him in a short amount of time. I appreciate him welcoming me into his home and family with open arms. May he rest in paradise. I know he is somewhere tuning into an Azzi Fudd game. Much love!
