Samuel B. Seigle, Esteemed Classics Scholar and Educator, Dies at 92

Samuel B. Seigle, a beloved professor of Classics whose teaching career spanned more than five decades, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, in New York City. He was 92.

Born on November 7, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the only son of Jack Seigle and Edith Barmen. Mr. Seigle earned degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University. He devoted his life to the study and teaching of ancient Greek and Latin languages, literature, and history.

During his 55-year tenure at Sarah Lawrence College, Mr. Seigle became known not only for his scholarly expertise but also for his deeply personal and inspiring mentorship. He encouraged generations of students to explore connections between ancient texts and modern life—long before interdisciplinary study was in vogue. As one former student remarked, “He made education personal and amazing.”

Mr. Seigle also taught at several other universities across the New York metropolitan area, shaping countless lives through his passion, intellect, and generosity of spirit.

Even after retiring, he remained the consummate teacher—hosting history seminars at his retirement community, reviewing graduate papers for friends and students, and warmly engaging all those he met.

When asked how he’d like to be remembered, Mr. Seigle said simply: “It’s not goodbye, it’s hello again.”
