Theodore "Ted" Malek was born on June 6, 1938 and passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 surrounded by family at his home in Las Vegas. He is survived by his wife, Judith, his daughter, Dana (Christopher), his two sons, Alexander (Kelly) and Joshua and his grandchildren Emma, Samara, Amelia, Zachary and Ari. He was predeceased by his father, Abraham (1963) and his mother, Sydelle (1988).
Ted was a New Yorker through and through, despite spending a few years of his childhood in California. He grew up an only child primarily in Brooklyn, and attended New Utrecht High School. He went on to graduate from Brooklyn College, where he was a member of Pi Lambda Delta fraternity. Like his father, Ted was also a member of the Freemasons, and attended meetings with his father until he passed away. In 1960, Ted joined the United States Army as a medical specialist and was stationed in Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
After leaving the military, Ted began his career in direct marketing with Dependable Lists, where he became a top producer. He went on to become president of Prescott Lists, and later started his own company, the List Authority, where he worked until he was forced to retire in 2011 after he became ill with dementia.
It was at a marketing firm in the late 1960s where Ted met his wife, Judith. They married in 1973, and later that year welcomed the first of three children, daughter, Dana Nicole. In 1976 they had their second child and first son, Alexander Michael. Finally in 1984, they had their third child – another son – Joshua Matthew. In 2005, Ted became a grandfather for the first time, and would have the honor of being one four more times. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, Ted left his beloved New York City for Las Vegas, Nevada to live with his daughter and her family.
Two of Ted’s greatest joys were his family and food. As an only child, he was exceptionally close to his cousins, and remained so throughout his life. He loved spoiling everyone with wonderful food. He had quite possibly the most impressive collection of take out menus on the Upper East Side, and hosted many a family gathering around the table. Along with family and food, Ted, who was always quick to laughter, loved spending time at the family country house in the Berkshires, engaging in a good debate, and recounting stories of his youth. His family and friends will miss his kindness, his generosity and his warmth.
Services to be held Wednesday, Oct. 25, 10:30 am, at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, New York City.
The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.
