

Tomiyo Tomita Prout, widow of Francis J. Prout, died July 11th at home with family, after a short illness. She had recently celebrated her 92 birthday. She was the daughter of Shigeyo Miura Tomita and Haruhiko Tomita.
Mrs. Prout was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and attended Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin. She had close friendships with fellow alumnae around the globe throughout her life. Tomiyo attended Briarcliff Junior College and studied classical piano, a lifelong passion. Tomiyo would share her musical gifts with her community in Manhattan.
Tomiyo is survived by five children: John Prout (Judith de Barany) of Panama; Frances Selby (Russell) of Manhattan; the Rev. Thomas Prout SJ of the Bronx; Alexander Prout (Susan), of Washington, D.C.; Catharine Novello (Marco) of Manhattan; and six grandchildren: Katie Selby, James Novello, and William Prout of Manhattan; Lucy, Chessy and Christianna Prout of Washington, D.C. In addition, she is also survived by a sister, Fueko Iwaoka (Yasuhiro), of Tokyo.
During her lifetime and through her work, philanthropy, and travel, she made many friendships which she treasured. Tomiyo had a special place in her heart for the Jesuit Mission of NYC, of which her son is a member, and has counted many Jesuits as her good friends. She was also active in the New York Junior League, and was on the board of the Knox School in St. James, NY.
