Brett Lee MacDonald

15 September, 195027 December, 2020

Our beloved husband, father and Papa, Brett Lee MacDonald passed away at home in Valencia, CA, on December 27, 2020 from an unexpected and sudden heart attack. He was 70 years old.

Brett was born in Glendale, CA on September 15, 1950 to Gordon and Dorothy Jean MacDonald, growing up with his two older brothers, Scott and Tim. He grew up as a happy member of the large La Crescenta MacDonald Clan.

He attended Lincoln Elementary School, Clark Jr. High and graduated from Crescenta Valley High School where he was varsity quarterback. Brett graduated in 1972 from The University of Southern California with a degree in Civil Engineering. He went to work alongside his brothers at the family business, G.A. MacDonald Construction Company, in Montrose, CA. In 2008 he started his own company, Brett L. MacDonald, Inc., Consulting Engineer, in Valencia, CA. He loved his work and never tired of creating new projects. He was greatly respected in his field and enjoyed working with his associates, team, and buddies on many projects throughout the years.

Brett and his wife Nancy met in high school and were married in 1977. They have two precious daughters, Bonnie Zant of Santa Barbara, CA and Annie Weir of Long Beach, CA. He was very close with and loved his two wonderful sons in law Brian Zant and Chris Weir. He adored his 5 grandchildren: Riley Zant, 10; Brennan Zant, 7; Lizzie Weir, 7; Maggie Weir, 3; and Liam Weir, 2. His favorite times were spent fishing, boating and water skiing at the family cabin at Lake Arrowhead with his family and friends. A very beloved Papa, he spent hours fishing with and teaching his grandkids to water ski.

Brett and Nancy enjoyed traveling and attending concerts. He loved Sam Cooke and Andrea Bocelli as well as country music. He was confirmed in the Catholic Church in 2012, and he and Nancy attended St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Santa Clarita, CA.

He loved his family more than anything in the world and considered raising his children to be his greatest achievement in life. Brett was kind, strong, quiet, and funny. He would crack you up with his jokes! A friend to all, devoted husband of 43 years, loving and proud father to his girls, and a really fun Papa to his beloved grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers Scott A. MacDonald of Tigard, OR and Timothy G. MacDonald of La Crescenta, CA, numerous cousins, and nieces and nephews all of whom he loved dearly.

Visitation and funeral mass will be held at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church on February 18, 2021 with burial service following at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, Newhall, for immediate and extended family only, due to COVID 19 restrictions. A celebration of our dear Brett’s life will be planned for some time in Summer 2021 — post pandemic❣️

Brett and I crossed paths 17 years ago when he submitted a development proposal for a very complex development project in Azusa/Irwindale, which started our friendship. He was an excellent negotiator and had a unique engineer mindset that I have yet seen anyone else quite like him.
Brett is a great friend and I will always remember his exceptional long-term vision in planning and creating new projects. I am so sorry for his passing and my prayers go out to the MacDonald family.

There are angels one meets on their path in life, whom elevate you beyond description. Brett was one of those angels to me and my family. I will miss him and I will forever cherish the memories we had together.

I first met Brett more than 10 years ago working on a project in the City of Irwindale. He was always a gentleman and always professional and upright. But more than that, Brett always had a way of bringing people together through his cheerful personality, his fun and witty charm, and his sense of doing what's right. He wasn't about only getting the job done, but he was about doing it the right way with the right people. My memory of Brett goes beyond who he was professionally, but it is all about who he was as a man of integrity and compassion, and as someone who always found joy in calling out the gold in others. He will be deeply missed. Lifting up prayers that God will comfort the MacDonald family in an abundance of love and grace.

Brett and I were both injured in the first football game of our senior season. We ended up in the same room at Adventist Hospital for about two weeks...since it was adventist there was no meat in any of the meals, we had family and friends sneak in Bob's Bigboy hamburgers to meet our needs!

Brett was always a gentle man, a straight shooter and seemed to enjoy just being...
rest in the peace of our Lord, my old friend
prayers to Nancy and all the family

I remember going trick or treating with Brett when we were kids down by his house and coming home with huge bags of candy! He was a good friend growing up. Sorry for your loss Nancy.

We were deeply saddened to hear the news. We spent some time with Nancy and Brett specifically at their beautiful home in Arrowhead which is not a cabin but a beautiful home overlooking the lake. Always a gentleman and so proud of his family. May he rest in peace and look down on us. Sincerely, Julia and Jim.
