Glen P. Sherman was born November 24, 1928 in Alamosa, Colorado. He was the third child born to Fern Limbach and John J Sherman. He grew up on Ferndale Ranch, in the Timberlake area northwest of Craig, Colorado where his father had homesteaded. Growing up, Glen attended a one-room country school and later Moffat County High School. As a young man, he enjoyed riding horses, learning rope tricks, and rodeo bull riding.
Glen met Shirley Ottens, daughter of Edith and Albert Ottens, at a dance at the Hamilton School in Hamilton, Colorado. Glen and Shirley were married in Craig on January 23, 1951. The newlyweds were stationed in Florida and California while Glen served as a member of the United States Marine Corps. After Glen’s time in the Marines, he and Shirley made their home north of Craig near Baggs, Wyoming where they started their family.
In 1953 Glen, Shirley and their 1-year old daughter left Colorado for Southern California. Glen joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1954. Shirley stayed home with their growing family, while Glen's career spanned a number of assignments and 26 years with the LAPD. Glen retired from the LAPD in 1980, having attained the rank of Lieutenant.
After his retirement from LAPD Glen was promptly hired by his home town, Craig, Colorado as their Chief of Police. As Chief he began the Substance Abuse Prevention Program (S.A.P.P.) and brought Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) to Craig.
Glen retired from the Craig Police Department in 1994 after serving 14 years as their Chief. In 1999, he and his wife Shirley left Craig for Santa Clarita, California where many of their children and grandchildren lived.
Glen and Shirley enjoyed traveling and visited 59 countries on six continents together. After Shirley passed in 2001, Glen spent his time supporting charities and programs important to him, including the Michael Hoefflin Foundation in Santa Clarita, California, and The Wyman Museum and Sherman Youth Camp, both in northwestern Colorado.
Glen was incredibly proud of his five children, and often credited his wife, Shirley for their loving and successful family. Glen took particular pride in his son John’s LAPD career, and watching John’s daughter, Nicole begin her LAPD career.
He is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Shirley O. Sherman, his parents, his brother Jack who died in childhood, and his sister Marjorie Cowie.
He is survived by his five children, Deanna Gannon (Bill) of Valencia, California, Dorene Melton (Dave) of Valencia, California, Alison Harris (Marty) of Hendersonville, North Carolina, John Sherman (Tracey) of Morgan, Utah, Melanie Shannon of Alameda, California, and brother Daniel Sherman of Craig, Colorado. Glen was the proud grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 17.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Sunrise at Sterling Canyon in Valencia, California. Glen spent the final 5 years of his life at Sunrise and their kindness and care is appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Museum of Northwest Colorado (museumnwco.org) or the Michael Hoefflin Foundation (mhf.org).
A graveside service for Glen will be held at 1pm on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 North Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91321. A Celebration of Life reception will immediately follow.
