Obituary
James Jasper Carlton, Sr. was born on December 12, 1918 in Marvan Falls, Wilson County North Carolina to James Luther and Minnie Harris Carlton. From this union there were two additional children, Beryl and Louise Carlton. Unfortunately, during the birth of Louise, neither Minnie nor Louise survived. Years Later, His father, James Luther married Ruby Parson. From this union there were nine additional children. James had the distinguished position of being the oldest brother and was loved and highly regarded by all of his siblings. He had a way of making each one feel as if they were his favorite.
Subsequently, James and his brother Beryl were raised by their paternal grandparents, Phil and Neely Carlton. James and Beryl bonded both as brothers and best friends. Their union was so tight that they were regarded as twins. The two “Carlton Boys” worked, played, and became great helpers on their grandparents’ farm.
James attended Happy Plain School and later joined the United States Army. He served as a combat soldier in World War II. He fought in both Germany and France. His duties included guard detail and armed combat from foxholes which he was required to remain inside for long periods, he often did not know when it was day or night. After bravely serving tours of duty for his country, he was blessed to return to the United States.
James was a coal miner in Berwind West Virginia where he met and married Amanda Mae Hairston in March 1950. From this union there were nine children, 6 boys and 3 girls. The family moved to Dayton, Ohio around 1956-1957, and moved again to San Fernando, California (1958), where they bought their first home.
In California James worked as a custodian and later as a food service worker for the Veterans Administration and started his own company “Carlton Maintenance”. He also worked for many years at Magnetic Products in Van Nuys. James was lead to Christ at an early age and then returned to Christ in his twenties. He was first Bishop of The Church of God In Jesus Christ and was blessed with many other spiritual gifts. He loved fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed fruit and corn bread with buttermilk.
James was a gentle and loved person and went to be present with the Lord the morning of March 17, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Amanda Mae Carlton, his father James Luther, his step mother Ruby “Grandmother” Carlton, sister, Phyllis A. Riley, and sister, Billie Jo Brown.
He leaves in loving memory; his children Randy –Joyce Carlton, Barbara- Greg Dixon, James- Susan Carlton, Kenneth- Johanna Carlton, Larry-Cozetta Carlton, Douglas-Mary Carlton, Beverly Brown, Darryl Carlton, Renee-Richard Scott; his brothers Beryl Carlton (Cleveland Ohio); Hadyn-Yvonne Carlton; John- Joyce Carlton; and Thomas Carlton. His sisters Linda Anderson, Hazel Faucett, Bessie-Jaye Wright, and Maxine Timmons; and finally, nieces, nephews, grand children, great grand children and a host of family and friends.

Special Remarks
“Jack, you were the best brother and best friend anyone could ever have. I will always cherish memories of you. I feel a void because of your absence but my consolation is that I know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Rest in peace my brother.”
Love Beryl
James, My oldest brother, what fond memories I have of you. My earliest memories are when you came home on furlough and I was approximately 5 years old and you took me to North Carolina from West Virginia for a family visit. Many years later you, Hazel, and I returned back to North Carolina via train. It was a heartwarming, historical trip for each of us. I have great admiration for your spirit and valuable guidance throughout my life. It has helped form me into the person I am today. James, I truly love you very very much. You will be greatly missed but I am glad you are now in the presence of the Lord. Your Sister Linda
Brother James;
I thank the Lord for the precious moments we shared together in the Lord, I’ll always treasure those wonderful times. You were an inspiration not only to me but by everyone you would meet. You truly were an example how a child of God should walk, you were always kind, soft spoken, gentle, meek, things I’m striving to be. Thank God, all the years he has blessed me to be on this earth, I’ve never seen you change. I thank the Lord for if I wanted to see you smile, all I had to do was mention “The Great I AM” this would always bring a smile to your face. God Bless you, and may you rest in Peace Brother,
John Carlton
Dear father,
You will be greatly missed. I thank the Lord for having the opportunity to experience what love of a father could be, as you embraced me from a young teenager, and loved me as your child and sister in Christ.
Susan
Fa,
Thank you for being the wonderful father that you were, you raised all of us to be honest God fearing adults. I know I was your mouthy child but you loved me in spite of this. You were strong and had an unusual humor which not everyone was blessed to see due to all of the responsibilities you had outside of your family. I love you and will miss you.
Beverly (Bevy Jean)
Dear Fa,
Thank you for the wonderful years that you provided for our family. You were a man of few words, but great strength. You made sure we knew about the Lord and taught us how to live right. You did a GREAT job raising nine children and I thank you for all of your hard work. My fondest memories were coming home from Grade school every day to cookies and fruit that you arranged on the tables. I love you very much and will miss you.
Renee (Ney)
Dear Father/Brother James: Father I want to thank you for being the GOD fearing Man that you are. Thank you for loving us and keeping a roof over our head for many years. I will miss you but I am thankful to the Lord for blessing you to make it home where there is peace and Joy that will never end. I will cherish the many wonderful memories that I have and look forward to one day seeing you again....in Jesus name Amen...... I Love you dearly! Kenny Sr.
It was a great pleasure knowing you in my early teens as a Spiritual Brother in Christ, and one of my leaders as a Bishop. Later in my life you became my wonderful Father-In Law. Father, I thank you for sharing with me The love of Christ and GOD’s teachings I will always cherish those special memories: Johanna Carlton
FaFA, we never had long conversations, but I learned from you by watching. I learned to be a hard worker when healthy and able, always find time for your family and love your wife, and always dress nice when going to church. All of these things have stuck with me to this day. I didn’t realize it until now. I love you and miss you. Kenny Jr.
Father, you have taught me so much. I remember watching you showed me how to lay cement. I wrote on the finish product 1957. I remember how humble you carried yourself. But when you ministered in church your base voice bellowed praises with a majestic thunder of a lion. None of us received that base voice that will be missed along with you. However, from mother and your teachings some of us have relationships with the LORD. We will continue to trumpet the good new to the masses. I look forward to being with you and mother in heaven. Until then GOD be with us. James Jr.
