James Oscar Smith was born in the Philippines on December 12, 1931. He grew up with the beach as his front yard and playground. He learned how to handle a fishing rod, swim like a fish, spend time with friends, and have a great time whenever he could. As a young man he hopped a freighter and worked for his transportation to the United States where he joined the Navy in 1955 until his discharge in 1959. He was a hardworking and disciplined father who, along with his wife, Rose, raised 4 children in Southern California.
He worked for Lockheed until he retired to Loreto, Mexico. He and Rose built a beautiful home where he spent 25 years in retirement. He bought a boat and continued to fish in the Sea of Cortez. He learned how to cook blowfish, which was very tasty. He listened to Trios and big bands in the evening where he could sit with Rose and drink a cold Modelo and watch the sunset on his front porch. He welcomed his children for vacation and waited for the at the gate of the airport where we always caught a smile on his face as we arrived through customs. Jim and Rose created a wonderful second chapter in their marriage which bonded them even more.
James left this world peacefully on May 28th surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and son-in law. His family mourns the loss of such a powerful quiet man who loved and protected his wife and family. He left a legacy of wisdom and strength.
He laughed and smiled the day he passed. Our heart is broken, but we rejoice in his freedom to dance with his wife, Rose, in everlasting life. Always singing to her “Besame mucho.”
