Rafael Corral Gomez, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated professional, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his devoted family, on April 12, 2026, in Palmdale, California. He was 97 years old.
Born on March 6, 1929, in Heber, California, Rafael was raised in Sonora, Mexico, alongside his five siblings. He lived a life defined by hard work, resilience, and deep devotion to his family and community. In his early years, he worked on his family’s cattle ranch, with a strong focus on agriculture. As a young man in the 1940s, Rafael served in the Mexican Army, completing his training in Guadalajara. After returning to the ranch for several years, he became a truck driver for the family business, traveling throughout the West Coast and playing an essential role in delivering cattle that supplied canned beef to the U.S. military during WWII.
Soon after, Rafael met and fell in love with Julieta in Navojoa, Sonora. They married in 1955 and began their family. In the late 1960s, Rafael moved his young family to Canyon Country, California, where he trained as a skilled industrial machinist in the aerospace industry. His hard work and dedication contributed to advancements in the field. Upon retirement, Rafael and Julieta settled in Palmdale, California.
Rafael’s deep love for his family only grew as his many grandchildren arrived over the years and into his retirement. He cherished the time he spent with them. Beyond family, Rafael found joy and fulfillment in many pursuits that reflected his love for life, creativity, nature, and precision. In his younger years, he enjoyed horse and bull riding, cattle roping, target shooting, hunting, and map reading. He also had a natural talent for repairing family vehicles.
He carried a lifelong love for animals, shaped by years of caring for livestock, and always had a beloved dog by his side, many of which became part of the family. Rafael also enjoyed archery and, at one point during his machinist career, even manufactured custom compound bows. He was an avid pool player throughout his life, and in retirement, he won a billiards championship at his local senior center, where he competed regularly.
Rafael was truly a green thumb. He and Julieta shared a love of gardening, tending to a variety of fruit trees and grapevines in their family backyard. He also loved cooking traditional Mexican dishes with Julieta, including menudo, barbacoa, carne asada, and tamales. He brought both beauty and nourishment to those around him, often accompanied by his lighthearted and playful sense of humor.
Rafael had a fascination with road maps that reflected his enduring curiosity about his town, region, and the many places he loved to travel. He always took care in choosing the best route to his destination. A skilled driver throughout his life, he never lost his sense of direction, even after he could no longer drive and remained the best navigator anyone could have on the road.
Rafael’s memory will be lovingly cherished by his devoted wife, Julieta; their daughters, Maria L. Vazquez, Martha C. Gomez, Julie Gonzalez, Celina M. Haerle, and Suzanne Gomez Hudson; their sons, Rafael Gomez Jr. and Jorge L. Gomez; as well as 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a large extended family, many dear friends, and countless others whose lives he touched.
Rafael and Julieta were faithful parishioners of St. Clare Catholic Church for many years and devoted members of the Guadalupana Association, representing the Hispanic Catholic community in Canyon Country.
A Rosary and Viewing will be held on May 4, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 N. Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91351. A Funeral Mass will be held the following day, May 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 19606 Calla Way, Canyon Country, CA 91351. Following the Mass, a procession will lead to the burial service at the Whispering Pines Garden at Eternal Valley Memorial Park at 1:00 PM.
Rafael’s life stands as an enduring testament to faith, hard work, and love for family and community. May he rest in eternal peace, and may his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
