Edith Marie (Leatherman) Sigmon

Edith Leatherman Sigmon 86 of Newton passed away peacefully Saturday morning August 21, 2021 following a lengthy period of declining health; 6 days after her husband of 65 years Clinton Sigmon passed away.

Edith was born in Catawba County on July 25th, 1935, to the late W.A. Leatherman and Georgia Heavner Leatherman. She was also preceded in death by brothers Floyd Leatherman and WA Leatherman, Jr. and sisters Lottie Johnson and Betty Dills.

She is survived by her two sons – Randy (Robin) and Mark (Amy); grandchildren Anna, Beau, Mollie (Christian), Maggie, Bethany Blankemeyer (Brad) and Mackenzie Greene and great grandchild Jackson. She is also survived by brother Marvin Leatherman and sister Rachel Parlier.

Mrs. Sigmon was an educator; she taught primarily 5th grade at Kenworth Elementary, Conover Elementary and her favorite Shuford Elementary. She had a passion for learning and passed that to her students and family.

She was an active member of Old St. Paul’s Lutheran where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was an active member of her WELCA Women’s Circle.

Edith was a phenomenal cook and loved making sure everyone had plenty to eat. She was also a planner as she planned the trips she and Clinton loved. Their favorite places were Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Disney World, and any Major League Baseball Game.

Special thanks go to caregivers: Her beloved granddaughters, Debbie Barger, Nancy Rudisill, Nancy Sailors, Debbie Shook and Francis Wright. She had been under Hospice care for about 6 months and Amanda, Kirsten and Kathy were very special to her. Special thanks to all.

Receiving for Clinton and Edith will be Tuesday August 24th from 6-8pm at Willis Reynolds.

Funerals for both will be Wednesday August 25th at 4 o’clock at Old St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Newton. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
