This one is a tough one for me. Garth was my “work Dad”. He’s been in my life for 31 years….He greatly contributed to the funeral director, manager and human being that I am today.  Until October we still got together every couple of months for a chinwag and coffee.  We were due for our coffee date…

I have so many fond memories with Garth. He supported and trained me for a future role in management within funeral services. He took a chance on an 18 year old co-op student with her head up her ass and helped me become a good funeral director and okay manager. This full circle of the co-op student to manager of a business she doesn’t own is in large part because of him. 

He was my sounding board right to the end on all things to do with work and funeral services. His last words to me 2 months ago were, “You are like a second daughter to me. I love you.” My response was “I love you too! I’ll see you next week.” I will hold onto that conversation until I die. 

I’m so proud that I was the funeral director to see him off, right to the end. It was a true honour. I will miss him always. 🩵

Deepest condolences to the family. Thinking about Maureen and the kids in this time of grieving! We are long time Cedar street neighbors and always enjoyed saying hello and having little chats with Garth! He was a wonderful man and will be sadly missed by all who loved him. Garth was a very able competitor at The Badminton Lawn Bowling Club where we enjoyed both sports and the comradery at "THE CLUB". we both served on the Board of Directors there too.
We also had good times at the cottage in Niagara on the Lake with Butch and the guys.

I was so sorry to hear about  Garth. He was my first cousin and I have lived quite a distance away from him for years.  When I popped in on him at work a number of years ago now he was very friendly and welcoming with a big smile. My condolences to his family.

I am so thankful to have had Garth as a Father In-law. He made me feel loved, respected and part of his family. I admired him for always trying to do his best for his family, putting their needs ahead of his own and being a caring husband to Maureen. I am thankful that he has been a wonderful role model to Kyle and that I benefit from that every day. I am so grateful to Garth for showing genuine interest in my work and his pride in my accomplishments. I respect that he valued hard work, living within your means and making sacrifices for the people you love. Kyle and I will do our best to honour that tradition. I will miss our daily chats,  check-ins and shared ribbing of his son. He has left a hole in my heart, but I take comfort that he is now at rest after what has been a challenging year for him and his family.

My deepest sympathies on the passing of Garth.  He was a man dedicated to his profession as a funeral director, and as the manager of Hetherington & Deans.  He became my mentor, adviser, confidant, and such a great friend during my management position at Hulse & English in St. Catharines.  He was a gentleman with such great humor, and such wit.  I'll long remember his smile, and his laugh.    Garth ensured that every family that crossed his path throughout his career was cared for through kindness, respect, and the assurance that their personal wishes during their loss would be fulfilled.  Garth made our profession proud.  May He Rest in Peace.

I remember first meeting Garth when he would drive in from Niagara Falls with the funeral coach to assist on services at Markey Dermody in Hamilton. I got to know him over the years and I enjoyed his insights, direct conversation and friendly manner. As a funeral director myself, I was impressed with his dedication to the families that he served. His commitment to them was his top priority at work. He was a great funeral director and manager. The profession just lost a good individual.

I am sorry to hear of his passing and pray for the family at this time.

Just heard that Garth has left us.  I found Garth to be a wonderful funeral director, full of passion. I loved his smile and sense of humour every time I met with him.

Dear Maureen and family,

Garth and I worked together for many years. He always asked how I was, and not just in a casual conversational way. He really wanted to know how I was, offering a kind word of support or advice. We spoke of how we were not only colleagues, but also good friends. Garth was a giant in the funeral industry, mentoring many young funeral directors to excel. He cared deeply about his staff, his family, his friends and the families he served. The world has lost one of the best.

Hetherington and Deans was where I did my apprenticeship, I was hired right from school and still very young.  Garth took me under his wing and taught me how to do things right, how to not shy away from work and pull my weight.  He was a true mentor, who I loved working beside.  Garth installed values that I have carried with me to this day.  I think about him often , especially when I see a lemon meringue pie.

I worked with Garth at Hetherington and Dean's when I started my funeral service career. I enjoyed every day going to work for him. He always made me smile and always wanted to teach me the right way to do things. He will always be fondly remembered for his genuine nature and his fun gruff manor. Thank you Garth for teaching me so much when I knew nothing.
