Giuseppe “Joseph” Merante 88, of Niagara Falls Ontario, passed away peacefully on September 14th, 2026, at home.
Joseph was born in Pentone, Catanzaro, Italy on September 18th, 1937, to Lina Pullano and Nicola Merante. He emigrated to Canada in December 1950 with his entire family to start a new life. Joseph grew up in Niagara Falls, and at the age of 16, Joseph moved to Toronto to pursue employment opportunities and continued living there until 2013, eventually moving back to Niagara Falls.
On June 2nd, 1962, he married Luisa Roma, and together they built a loving home. Living in Toronto for 53 years. Together, they raised their three children: Maria, Nick and Michael.
Joseph will be remembered for his love for his family and friends and his very generous spirit and his passion for reading, soccer, gardening, and cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was an active member of at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Toronto and Our Lady of the Scapular Church in Niagara Falls and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Luisa; his children, Maria Primi (Tony), Nick (Paula) and Michael (Suzanne); and his grandchildren, Michael, Marco, Daniella (David), Christina (Marcos), Isabella, Joseph and Francesca. His sisters Anita (Gino) Montagano, Lilla (Frank) Kostelac, and his brothers, Anthony (Bill) Merante and Lou (Donna) Merante. He was predeceased by his parents, Lina and Nick Merante, his sisters Maria (Nick) DeGiuli, Valeria (Freddy) Fagiani.
The family will receive friends at Patterson Funeral Home, 6062 Main Street, Niagara Falls, on Monday from 1-3 & 6-8 p.m. Vigil prayers will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 2:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Scapular Church, 6557 Thorold Stone Road, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 11 a.m. Rite of committal will follow at Fairview Mausoleum.
