September 18, 1941 – February 15, 2025
Valarie (Val) passed away peacefully at 5:12am in her sleep on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in the Oncology wing at the St. Catharines General Hospital.
Val (née Oatley) was the loving wife & best friend to Morris (Moe) Vaughan for the past 60 years. Adored and loving mother to Brian (Rita) Vaughan and Brenda (Dave) Merritt. Proud and cherished grandmother to Jessica and Jackson and step grandmother to Alex and Alexis Merritt. Dear sister to Eugene, Larry (Lorna), Douglas (Linda) and Susan (Derek) and sister-in-law to Winnie Vaughan. Loving aunt to Larry (Michelle), Jimmy (Darlene), great aunt to Jacob, Marshall, Sarah and Jordan. Predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Beatrice Oatley, Harley and Lena Vaughan, Sister-in-law Sharon Sullivan, Patricia Oatley and Brother-in-law Larry Vaughan Sr.
Val worked and was involved in many different organizations, Washington Mills, a key punch operator at Pitney Bowes, a stay at home mom, a secretary with Scouts Canada - Niagara District, a Lieutenant in the Cadet Instructors List with 2835 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corp, the Flag Mother for the Order of St. George to name a few. Val was not the centre of attention but was always there to give a hand wherever needed as she was the type of person that preferred to be in the background away from all the “glitz and glamour”. The highlight to Val’s day was doing things with her grand kids, as any grandparent spoiling them was a norm but at the same time encouraging them to pursue their dreams and always try new things, however the grand kids would be asking her to make more apple pies.
The family wishes to thank the many amazing people for their exceptional care for Val up to her death, including her many cancer related heath care professionals, especially Dr. Michael Levesque, the home care attendants and finally but not least, the amazing staff at both Niagara Falls and St. Catharines General Hospitals with whom she had met with the many visits over the past 20 years fighting cancer.
In keeping with Val’s wishes, a single day gathering to celebrate her life will be held at Hetherington & Deans Funeral Chapel, 5176 Victoria Avenue, Niagara Falls on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 10am until 1pm with the funeral to follow in the Chapel.
Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
