April 9, 1974 - June 26, 2021
Ethan was born in Manchester, Connecticut and lived in Greensboro, NC, Canterbury, CT, Westbrook,
CT and San Diego, CA. He worked with his hands, mostly in construction, and could fix just about
anything. He loved science, nature, and all animals, especially his dog Foxy, who traveled the country
with him. He had a wicked sense of humor and loved to learn about the world. His love for science,
learning, and his wit and silver tongue culminated in a science-fiction novel, which his dear Aunt Dory
Herman-Sample encouraged him to write, and helped him edit.
Ethan was most proud of his valiant and successful battle against addiction. While he was sad to leave
his California “family,” he came home to fight cancer in his final months. He faced his illness with
courage and died peacefully with his family by his side.
He is survived by his loving parents, Katherine (Kate) and Phillip Zapadka of Westbrook CT; his brother Nathaniel Zapadka of Worcester, MA; sisters Amanda Marrotte and Sarah Zapadka of New Britain, CT; sons Jakob Zapadka and Ethan Zapadka of Stafford Springs; his cherished friend and mentor Larry Canepa of San Diego CA; his California family of friends; and many aunts, uncles and cousins throughout the country.
The family wishes to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to the personnel at Smilow Cancer Hospital
of Guilford and Hospice of Connecticut Star Unit for their kindness and compassion during his final
illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Hospice of Connecticut, 100 Double
Beach Road, Branford, Connecticut, 06405.
Services will be held Sunday, July 18, 2021, at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home , located at 13 Lake
Avenue, Niantic, Ct.
Calling hours are 1 PM to 2PM, followed by a short service at the funeral home, with burial at the
convenience of the family.
